Beat winter cabin fever with Roger Williams Park Zoo

Roger Williams Park Zoo can help beat winter cabin fever with fun environmental education programs for all ages.

Parents with young toddlers will enjoy the Zoo’s Preschool Adventures classes, where the Zoo’s youngest guests learn about an animal or area of the Zoo based on a different theme each month. In March, young ones can hop along to the theme “Fantastic Frogs”; April brings them close to the Zoo’s “Amazing Anteaters”; and in May, they will learn about animals that swish and splash in the Wetlands Trail. RWP Zoo members can enroll in these 90-minute classes for $14, and the cost for non-members is $42, which includes Zoo admission.

Another great event for the little ones is the Rock and Roar! Rock-A-Baby concert series. These exciting 45-minute concerts offer fun for the whole family, with each month’s show featuring a different animal or nature theme. Do the “Sea Creature Shimmy” in March, attend the “Bird Ball” in April, or wiggle to the “Butterfly and Bug Boogie” in May. A parent-child pair is $15, and it’s only $5 for each additional participant in addition to Zoo admission.

The Zoo also offers winter programs for bigger kids, like the Zoo Explorers classes. These hour-long programs inspire children to have fun while learning more about the world and the animals in it. The monthly themes mirror the Preschool Adventures classes, however, this program is designed specifically for children ages 6 to 8. Members pay just $14 per child, and the price for non-members is $27 per child, which includes admission to the Zoo.

While the Zoo focuses much of its education programming on its youngest visitors, there are also fun events for teens and adults. Snack and Paint Afternoons for ages 13+, and Wine and Paint Nights for ages 16+ are instructor-led workshops for artists of all skill levels to create artwork that can be proudly displayed at home. Paint Night events include a glass of wine for participants age 21+. The $35 price per person provides everything needed, including the canvas paints, brushes, a smock, and refreshments.

Two Wine and Cheese Conservation Lectures offer fascinating programs about endangered species and the conservation efforts to save them from extinction. April’s lecture brings guests to the cloud forests of Papua New Guinea with author Sy Montgomery to discover the highly endangered Matschie’s tree kangaroo. In May, myths about the elusive timber rattlesnake are debunked by RWP Zoo Conservation Director Lou Perrotti. Each lecture is $25 per person, which includes refreshments, including wine for participants age 21+.

Roger Williams Park Zoo offers all of these programs, and much more all year long. For information on other education programs, family events, or ZooCamps, visit www.rwpzoo.org and click the “Education” tab.
