Hangar 1, which at one time also included the Green Airport control tower, came to the ground yesterday as the jaws of demolition equipment bit into the walls and roof of the structure. The hangar is being removed to comply with Federal Aviation Administration safety standards. The building was too close to Runway 16-34. That runway, the shorter of two at the airport, is currently closed as contractors work on extending the runway protection zone. The even larger project of extending the airport’s main runway and relocation of Main Avenue is due to start in 2016.
