Big hits lift Continental past St. Gregory’s in Red Andrews Tournament

Twenty-eight of the 36 outs recorded in Tuesday’s Red Andrews Tournament game between Warwick Continental and St. Gregory’s came via the strikeout. At the other end of the spectrum, pitchers combined to walk 19 batters.

And in between all of that, Continental found a way to win.

Thanks to some key hits with men on base, Continental jumped to an early lead and held on for a 9-3 win.

“It wasn’t the prettiest game but we made it,” said Continental manager Carl Gothberg.

Five Continental pitchers combined for 15 strikeouts, with Nate Dunn finishing off the win. He pitched the final 1.2 innings, and every out he recorded was a strikeout. Brandon Lajoie, Cam Gothberg, Jason Herchuck and Aaron Clary also pitched for Continental. Gothberg recorded four strikeouts and Clary, the starting pitcher, finished with four in 1.2 innings.

On the other side, St. Greg’s racked up 13 strikeouts. Jacob Brennan struck out two in two innings and Nate McCamish struck out four in 1.2 innings. Mike Torti came on in the fourth and recorded seven outs, all on strikeouts. He didn’t allow a hit.

But Continental’s early offense still carried the day.

In the top of the first, Cam Gothberg legged out an infield hit and came all the around on a series of wild pitches. Brady Jacques was hit by a pitch and scored when Zach Brodeur was caught stealing at second base.

Continental added a run in the second on a walk to Lajoie, who took second when Dunn was hit by a pitch and later scored on a wild pitch. In the third, Gothberg had an RBI single, with another run scoring on an error.

After St. Greg’s scored two in the bottom half of the third on a two-run single by McCamish, Continental blew the game open in the fourth. Brodeur was hit by a pitch, Lajoie reached on a fielder’s choice and Dunn singled to load the bases. After St. Greg’s pitcher McCamish came back with two strikeouts, Herchuck smashed a ground ball up the middle to plate two runs. Later in the frame, Continental scored two more on bases-loaded walks.

Torti came out of the bullpen to end the threat in the fourth and cruised from there, getting five swinging strikeouts and two looking as he kept Continental off-balance.

“A couple of good hits,” Carl Gothberg said. “Bats were a little weak. Their last pitcher, his speed was a little slower and we didn’t make the adjustment.”

Torti’s pitching kept St. Greg’s within striking distance but it could only manage one more run, which came on an RBI single by Brennan in the fourth inning. St. Greg’s did load the bases with nobody out in the fifth, but Dunn took the mound for Continental and got three quick outs – two by strikeout – to end the threat. In the sixth, he struck out the side around a walk to finish off the win for Continental.

Cam Gothberg had the best offensive day with two hits, while Dunn and Herchuck had one each for Continental. Brennan and McCamish had the only hits for St. Greg’s.

For Continental, Clary, Jacques, Brodeur, Lajoie, Alex Pennachini and Albert Cambio all reached base. For St. Greg’s, Torti, Chris Gannon, Matt Davenport, Ben Maguire, David Lynch, Matt Galipeau and John Fitzgerald were all on base.

St. Greg’s was set to play again on Wednesday, with results unavailable at press time. Continental will be in action Thursday in the semifinals.

“We’re going to compete,” Carl Gothberg said. “I think we have a good chance here. We just need to hit the ball and we didn’t do a very good job of that tonight. I think we’ll do alright. It should be a good, competitive tournament.”
