Blood Center holds education, survivor events during Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Teaming with the Gloria Gemma Resource Foundation, the Rhode Island Blood Center will host a series of events at its five donor centers throughout October – its GO PINK campaign – that raise breast cancer awareness, promote education and encourage people to donate blood for the cancer patients who rely on donors for their regular transfusions to keep fighting.

The focus of these events will cover prevention, detection and diagnosis, nutrition, complementary medicine, treatment and cancer survivor days.

Additionally, the Gemma Foundation’s Hope Bus will visit each center at some point during the month.

While not all breast cancer patients receive blood transfusions, transfusions often are required during surgery, when patients receive chemotherapy, and radiation.

For a schedule of events at fixed site locations, visit the Rhode Island Blood Center’s website at www.ribc.org. For more information on breast cancer and resources, visit the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation at www.gloriagemma.org or the American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org.

The Warwick Blood Center, located at 615 Greenwich Ave., Warwick (Behind the Sleepy’s), is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
