Blue Man Group coming to PPAC

Posted

I first saw Blue Man Group at the Charles Theatre in Boston, where I was blown away by one of the most unique shows I have ever seen. I sat down the next morning to write my review and quickly discovered that there just weren’t words to describe what they did.

How would telling readers that they filled their mouths with Cap’n Crunch, threw toilet paper into the audience, played mouth-catch with marshmallows and banged on drums that splattered paint all over the place, entice anyone to buy a ticket?

I’ve seen them three more times, again in Boston, where a friend was pulled into the show, and again at PPAC, where they had changed some of the antics by using some modern electronics and lasers.

What can I tell you without spoiling the spontaneity of the show?

Three guys painted blue go crazy on the stage. There’s lots of drumming, some audience participation, lots of color and movement and loads of laughs.

If you have seen Blue Man Group before, you’ve probably bought your tickets already. Amazingly, they appeal to everyone with a funny bone, from little kids to senior citizens.

Combining comedy, music and technology, they entertain without ever letting up to catch their breath. The act has grown, with permanent performances in Vegas, long runs in major cities, and because there is no talking they reach people all over the world.

Blue Man Group is at the Providence Performing Arts Center March 6-8, Friday at 7:30 p.m., Saturday at 2 and 8 p.m., and Sunday at 1 and 6:30 p.m. Tickets range from $38 to $78. Call 421-ARTS for reservations.
