Board of Canvassers receives state grant for poll location repairs

Posted

The Board of Canvassers has received a grant of $7,469.02 from the Governor’s Commission on Disabilities (GCD) to make repairs to polling locations throughout the city.

In a recent release, Mayor Scott Avedisian said that state Board of Elections’ representatives visited each poll location to determine its suitability based on their parameters and those of the GCD. Board of Canvassers employee Dottie McCarthy took note of repairs that needed to be made and coordinated with the Department of Public Works and the School Department to determine a cost estimate. McCarthy submitted the grant request and was informed earlier this week that the full grant has been awarded, Avedisian said.

“It is very important that our polling locations are accessible and secure for all voters,” Avedisian said. “I am grateful to Dottie, the DPW and the School Department for working collaboratively to ensure that the polls will be ready well before the September primaries.”

“This was quite a labor-intensive process for Dottie, and she met every specification and deadline, resulting in the funds for permanent repairs to the public buildings that we use for voting purposes,” added Donna J. McDonald, elections director.
