Bouchard named D-III POY

CCRI captain Ross Bouchard of South Kingstown has been named the NJCAA Division III Tennis National Player of the Year. He is the third CCRI player in four years to win that honor, joining Alex Cavanagh in 2010 and Mike Fallone in 2012.

“He totally deserves it,” said head coach Deb Panzica. “He has been a leader for us since day one this year and I am glad that all the other coaches recognize what a great player and teammate he is.”

Fresh off winning the honor, Bouchard is leading the Knights at the National Tournament this week in Plano, Texas.

Day one of the tournament was a tough one for the Knights, who won only one of the nine matches they played. That left them in fifth place out of eight teams at the championship. Bergen Community College is in first place with eight points.

The highlight of the day for the Knights came in Second Doubles when the team of Bouchard and Tim Holzinger (Foster) defeated Alex Day and Nick Moore from Oxford College of Georgia 6-4 and 6-1, giving the Knights two team points.

In No.1 singles, John Chammat (Cumberland) lost to No. 1 seed Maclane Smoke from Brookdale CC (N.J.) 6-0 and 6-1. In No. 2 singles, Otniel Lopes (Pawtucket) lost to Carlos Munoz from Bergen CC (N.J.) 6-0 and 6-3. In No. 3 singles Ross Bouchard lost to Kyle Fligel from Bergen CC 6-2 and 6-3. In No. 4 singles Sean Gorman (Wakefield) fell to Nick Moore from Oxford College 6-4 and 6-4. In No. 5 singles Holzinger fell to No. 2 seed Eric Sapiro from Bergen CC (N.J.) 2-6, 6-0 and 6-1. And in No. 6 Singles, Eddie Papineau (Scituate) lost to Roger Hunt from Oxford College 7-6 (9-7), 4-6 and 6-3 in the closest match of the day for the Knights.

Rounding out the Day for the Knights were the other two doubles matches. In No. 1 doubles Chammat and Gorman fell to Mike Perrone and Donovan Vassalotti from Gloucester County CC (N.J.) 6-4 and 6-2. Finally, in No. 3 doubles Lopes and Papineau lost to Mike Mares and Matt Schrader from Onondaga CC (N.Y.) 6-1 and 7-5.

Knights’ baseball signs Vets standout Boyajian

The CCRI Knights baseball team has already signed their first prized recruit for the upcoming 2014 season. On Tuesday, the Knights signed T.J. Boyajian from Warwick Veterans High School. Boyajian was a two-sport star at Vets, where he was a running back on the football team and played infield on the Hurricanes baseball team. In 2012, Boyajian earned Second-Team All-State honors in baseball for Vets as an infielder.

Boyajian fits the mold of a CCRI baseball player with his versatility and will probably slot into the top part of the line-up with his speed and athleticism.

“TJ is a fantastic athlete and student,” CCRI head coach Ken Hopkins said. “He fits the profile of the players we want in our program. He is a great student, with great character, and athletic ability to play many positions. His heart is the size of a lion and he plays like Dustin Pedroia. We are very lucky to have him join our CCRI baseball family.”
