Boyd’s goal in triple OT sends ’Canes to semis

In Warwick Vets’ final year, its field hockey team gave it a lasting memory with its win on Tuesday night.

Brittney Boyd’s goal at 1:30 of the third overtime lifted the ’Canes past Tiverton, 2-1, in the quarterfinals of the Division II playoffs.

It was an emotional win for Vets in its last game on its home field, as the semifinals will be played at East Greenwich and the finals at Roger Williams University.

The ’Canes were determined to leave their turf with a win. It didn’t come easy, but they were able to do just that.

“We definitely wanted it more than them at the end,” Vets’ head coach Jim Areson said after the marathon victory. “I’m just so glad, it’s a nice way to go out. This is the last time that we’ll all be on this field together. I’m happy we’re going out with a win.”

Vets came in as the No. 4 seed and Tiverton the No. 5 seed. This was evident in the flow of the game, as the two teams played evenly, trading chances back-and-forth.

Vets and Tiverton took a scoreless tie into halftime, but the Tigers carried a majority of the play in the first 30 minutes.

Sophomore goalkeeper Mary Greenwell came up big on a number of occasions to keep Tiverton off the board.

Greenwell stonewalled Haley Mendoza on a quality chance, before turning aside a shot from Charlotte Sanford from in close to preserve the scoreless tie.

In the second half, Vets picked up its play, generating more opportunities.

That play paid dividends.

Midway through the second frame, Vets earned a corner hit. Natasha Savage received a pass to the right of the goal and fired a cross to the front of the net. After the ball wiggled its way through traffic, it found the stick of Eunice Tejeda, who ripped a shot by Tiverton keeper Allyson Ramos to give the ’Canes a 1-0 lead.

“That was Eunice Tejeda’s first varsity goal, so that was awesome,” Areson said. “What a time to score it.”

However, Tiverton would make a push and respond when a pair of seniors connected to tie the game.

The Tigers gained possession in Vets’ territory and a cross found its way to Lauren Smith in the middle of the field. She would wind up and send a shot towards the net that was deflected by Julienne Hughes, making its way past Greenwell to knot the score at 1.

The game was then sent to overtime, where Vets accrued the majority of the offensive chances.

Off of a corner, Michelle Spremulli put a shot to the back of the net past Ramos, but the goal was called off because the ball was driven above the knee on the first hit.

Tiverton’s best chance came just following the disallowed goal. It pushed the ball up the field and caught Vets’ defense off guard as Ireland McGreavy went in all alone. Luckily for Vets, her shot at a wide open net rolled wide to keep the first overtime alive.

After neither team scored in the first overtime, the two teams played a second extra period, but that didn’t decide a winner either.

It wasn’t until 1:30 of the third overtime that Vets emerged victorious.

The ’Canes were able to get out in transition and back up Tiverton’s defense with speed up front from Boyd and Morgan Oliver. Oliver took the ball and attacked the left side of the goal. She drew the defender towards her before sliding a pass across to Boyd, who was all alone against Ramos. The Tigers’ keeper came out to contest, but Boyd was able to jam a shot by her, triggering an emotional celebration for the ’Canes.

“It just happened so fast,” Boyd said of her game-winning goal. “I was ready for it, though. I wanted to win it so bad.”

Areson’s message to the team was simple as the game wore on.

“[Areson] just kept telling us that we had to want it more than them,” Boyd said. “We did. We worked so hard that whole game. No one gave up and we were all there for each other.”

Vets now has a tall task in front of it. It now gets the undefeated Cumberland Clippers tonight at 8 p.m. at East Greenwich in the semifinals.

The Clippers hadn’t allowed a goal all season until their 4-2 quarterfinal win over Rocky Hill on Tuesday.

But the ’Canes certainly aren’t going to back down.

“Maybe we can catch them if we score early,” Areson said of Vets’ upcoming matchup with Cumberland. “They’ve never been in that situation.”

If the ’Canes win tonight, they’ll play for the D-II title on Sunday at 5 p.m. at Roger Williams.

“They still get to wear Warwick on their chest on Thursday,” Areson said. “If they can do it on Sunday, it would be awesome.”
