Boys & Girls Clubs guide promotes positive parenting

Thanks to a grant, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Warwick will be making available to parents and caregivers the guide, “28 Ways to Teach Nonviolence, Kindness and Peacefulness to Children.”

Distribution of the guide, which provides tools and peaceful strategies for dealing with stressful situations, will start today and carry on next week said Eleanor Acton, the club’s director of development. She said parents are also being urged to talk with club staff about effective alternatives to discipline using positive and proactive methods.

“28 Ways…’ and other materials that inspire positive parenting are also being incorporated into the organization’s handbook that is given to every parent or caregiver that registers a child for child care. Additionally, links to the information are also being added to the Clubs website, www.wbgclubs.org.

The guides are being made available at both club branches in Norwood and Oakland Beach.

The BGCW is promoting positive parenting in conjunction with The Center for Effective Discipline, a program of Gundersen National Child Protection Training Center, which makes available information about effective alternatives to discipline using positive and proactive methods. Based on research, the Center promotes positive parenting through education, training and more. Acton said a grant from Gundersen has made the materials available.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Warwick is a private, nonprofit organization with branches in the Norwood and Oakland Beach neighborhoods in Warwick. The Boys & Girls club serves youth ages 5-18 with special concern for those who need us most to help them become productive, responsible members of society.
