Hendricken swimming head coach Dave Hanson, who created the program in 1978, didn’t hesitate when he was asked where sophomore Max Miranda ranked among the swimmers he’s seen.
“Number one.”
Miranda is the first-ever Hawks’ swimmer to be named a high school All-American and helped his school earn another state championship this winter. He owns the state record for the 200-meter freestyle, a mark he set as a freshman and then broke by three seconds this season.
Miranda also won the 100-meter butterfly and was a member of the victorious 400-meter free relay and 200-meter medley free relay teams at the state championship meet.
“No. 1 he has talent,” Hanson said. “No. 2 he probably works harder than anyone else. People don’t realize how hard he works. He’s just a motivator.”
To put in perspective Miranda’s talent, he competed against 29-year-old Olympic legend Michael Phelps in the 200-meter fly in Santa Clara, Calif. Phelps won the race, but Miranda finished 15th at only 15 years old.
“I just think he’s gonna keep getting better, and all-around,” Hanson said.
At the rate he’s progressing, it may not be long before Miranda hops into an Olympic pool as a representative of the United States.
