Warwick Vets’ Levi Martin was able to take down Hendricken’s Ben Murphy, the indoor track high jump state champion, at the RIIL Outdoor Track State Championship by clearing a height of 6 feet, 4 inches.
And Martin did so on his first jump.
“I just focused on planting my foot right all offseason,” Martin told the Beacon’s Matt Metcalf after his victory in early June. “I tried to work on dorsiflexion with my foot. I also wanted to make sure I was relaxed through all of my motions, even before the meets.”
Murphy was just able to equal Martin at the 6 feet, 2 inches mark earlier in the competition, but could not achieve 6 feet, 4 inches.
“He’s a very smart jumper and is very in tuned to what he needs to do so he was able to pick it up,” Warwick Vets boys’ track head coach Ed Kimmerlein said of Martin.
Martin, a junior this year, bypassed the indoor track season to play basketball instead. However, he did say that he believes basketball “helps with jumping a lot, jumping frequently.”
Martin wasn’t able to clear the 6 feet, 6 inches mark at either the state championship or New Englands the following week.
With a little more training, though, there isn’t any reason to think Martin can’t reach that new height and find himself repeating as state champion in 2016.
“I see him hitting 6 [feet], 6 [inches] next year,” Kimmerlein said. “This is all speculation but we felt his 6-foot-4 jump at states could have cleared 6-foot-6 and his last attempt at it was very close so I think he’s a very goal-oriented kid and he sets goals for himself and I think he will hit that goal.”
