The Warwick Beacon Boys’ Volleyball Player of the Year is Pilgrim senior captain Rob Quaine.
Quaine was a three-year starter under head coach Mike McGiveron, and as Quaine grew as a player, so did the program.
Pilgrim moved up to Division I in Quaine’s first year on the varsity team. In that first year, the Pats won three matches. They then won six matches last year before coming away victorious in eight this season.
A big reason for that was Quaine, who emerged as one of the best hitters in all of Division I.
“Rob was a co-captain of mine and a three-year varsity player,” McGiveron said. “He led by example and had great competitiveness on the court which made the team around him better.”
Although Quaine was a great hitter, he was an extremely versatile player, helping McGiveron and his teammates wherever he was needed.
“There was nothing Rob couldn’t do on the court,” McGiveron said. “He was a great blocker when I needed him to play the middle, an 82% server, a good passer and a great hitter who could put the ball wherever he wanted to.”
Quaine flat out lit it up this season, compiling 172 kills, 29 service aces, 34 blocks and 102 digs for the season.
Pilgrim fell in the Division I quarterfinals to Mount St. Charles, 3-0, but the growth of the program has been inevitable.
The Pats will now have to move forward without the tremendous leadership of Quaine and fellow senior Blake Doelling.
Quaine plans on continuing his volleyball career next year when he attends the Community College of Rhode Island, with the hopes of playing for a four-year college at some point down the line.
