Brady & Mangum bring improv to Cranston

Jonathan Mangum called from Los Angeles to talk about his upcoming show with his long-time pal Wayne Brady at the Park Theatre in Cranston this Saturday, April 25.

Mangum and Brady are best known for their many appearances on the popular TV shows, “Let’s Make a Deal” and “Whose Line Is It, Anyway?”

“Think about it,” Mangum said, improv is something special because you can’t do it by yourself. And it is different every night. It never gets old. We may get old, but it never gets old.”

He and Brady have been doing it together since they first met in Orlando over 15 years ago.

“We played the SAK Theatre to packed audiences every night,” he said. “Orlando was a tourist city, but we played largely to a local crowd.”

The dynamic duo is known worldwide thanks to a huge television audience for the two shows, plus Brady’s Emmy-winning TV talk show, movies, sit-coms and personal appearances.

“On May 4, I’ll be doing my 1,000th episode of “Let’s Make a Deal”, Mangum said.

TV is very demanding of their time, but they enjoy going on the road and meeting new audiences.

“Every audience is different,” Mangum said, “and every show is different. You have to have quick wit and imagination. You have to feel out the audience.

“We’ll be involving the audience at the Park,” he said. “We never want to be cute and ridicule or embarrass an audience member.

“We avoid choosing the guy who jumps up and down and waves his arms. Over the years we’ve learned to filter them out. I usually pick the person next to them. Improv is exciting and spontaneous. You always have choices. I like to see people’s faces when we surprise them or ask them for suggestions.”

I’ll be at the Park Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. Perhaps I’ll make a suggestion or two for a skit. But I won’t jump up and down or wave my hands wildly.
