Breezy, energy-filled start to Apponaug Babe Ruth season

They could have done without the wind that had kids and their parents looking for their jackets and holding onto their hats Saturday for opening day of the Apponaug Babe Ruth League, Cal Ripken Baseball at O’Brien Field in the shadow of City Hall.

Conditions, however, did nothing to blunt the enthusiasm of another season. There’s reason to be encouraged, too, for despite the decline of school aged kids in the city, participation is up and the league added three teams to their ranks according to coach for The Storm, Mike Karpowich. With more than 230 kids participating, Karpowich said the league has 23 teams from T-ball with 5-year-old players up to the majors who are 12 years old.

On average, Karpowich said, teams will play 22 games in a season not counting playoffs.

“Apponaug outshines them all,” league co-president Brad French said after the players lined the field. He estimated 400 man-hours went into preparing the field for the season. And with the ceremony completed the players were ready to start hitting and throwing the ball. (Text and photos by John Howell)
