Briefing the mayor

Posted

Recently students from Timothy Hayes’ Urban Sociology class at Toll Gate High School met with Mayor Scott Avedisian to discuss their community service project. They are working with the Warwick Commission on Historical Cemeteries cleaning and improving several cemeteries throughout Warwick. They have been working with the Commission and the Public Archeology Lab (PAL) in Cemetery #52 on Eton Avenue. The Commission received a Community Development Block Grant to hire PAL to determine the location and direction of bodies placed in this cemetery and to find additional cemetery stones buried in this cemetery. This cemetery was grossly vandalized over 50 years ago to the point that the location and direction of the burials was not known. They will be continuing to work in this cemetery, repairing broken stones and placing stones and bases in their correct location. Anyone wishing to perform community service in Warwick’s Historical Cemeteries should contact Sue Cabeceiras of the Warwick Planning Department at 738-2000 ext. 6286. Pictured are: Alex Beltran, Mayor Avedisian and Manny Pickering, not pictured is student Josh Sandin. (Photo courtesy of Sue Cabeceiras)
