Bring your dancing shoes on Mother’s Day, says R&B legend Gill

Johnny Gill has a message for mothers planning to attend his performance at Cranston’s Park Theatre this weekend.

“Bring your dancing shoes. When you walk out, you’re going to have your other shoes in your hands,” he said with a laugh. “It’s going to be a fun, fun shoe…When I put that mic in my hand, I’m going in there and it’s serious business.”

An R&B star whose career spans decades, Gill boasts a range of achievements in the entertainment industry. A member of the legendary group New Edition as well as L.S.G. and Heads of State, he has collaborated with renowned artists such as Janet Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Boyz II Men, Wyclef Jean, Babyface and R. Kelly. He has released numerous solo albums and made multiple appearances on television and in movies. On May 11 – Mother’s Day – he will perform in Cranston with special guest jazz saxophonist Elan Trotman.

Gill is preparing to return to the road with New Edition in June and is also finishing a new solo album due out this year. In putting together an album, he sets the bar very high.

“I just can’t bring myself to put song fillers on a record,” he said, adding that his goal is to create a recording filled with songs that could all be radio singles – something where “from the beginning to end, you go, ‘Woah.’”

Gill said Sunday’s show will have “little things here and there” as a special nod to Mother’s Day. He spoke highly of Rhode Island audiences and said he looks forward to returning to the state for performances.

“The audience is always on fire in Rhode Island,” he said, referencing a recent show in the Ocean State with New Edition. “The energy is, like, insane…They’re consistent with it.”

Gill also spoke of the importance of providing a platform for other artists, such as Trotman.

“Someone gave me an opportunity…It’s so important we look out for each other,” he said.

Looking ahead, Gill said he plans to continue pursuing various opportunities in music and acting. A veteran of the industry, he said his experience has provided a unique perspective.

“I’ve been pretty busy,” he said. “It’s crazy after 31 years, you look at how the business has evolved…That’s what keeps it exciting.”

The show begins at 7:30 p.m., and tickets are available by calling the Park Theatre box office at 467-7275 or visiting www.parktheatreri.
