What does it mean to “be a man,” and what do we mean when we utter those words to young boys? That’s what the Rhode Island Coalition Against Domestic Violence (RICADV) will ask on Sept. 8 during its “Bro-moting Masculinity” event at the Warwick Public Library.
From their childhoods on, boys are “bombarded” with ideas and interpretations on what constitutes a “real man,” writes RICADV in a release. These constructs of masculinity are sometimes harmful, predisposing boys to substance abuse, self- harm and violent acts. RICADV’s workshop will discuss cultural influences that mold society’s definition of manhood and how these impact both boys and girls.
The event takes place Sept. 8 at the Warwick Public Library from 1-4 p.m. Cost of attendance is $20 and those interested must register at www.ricadv.org.

And so the women of RICADV will tell the boys what it means to be a man? Really?
