The Community College of Rhode Island has promoted women’s basketball assistant coach Brittany Brown to head coach for the upcoming 2013-14 season.

In June, former head coach Kate Lynch accepted the head coach position at NCAA Division II Molloy College in Rockville Center, N.Y. Lynch had been at the helm of the Lady Knights for three seasons and she was named Women’s Basketball Coaches’ Association National Coach of the Year for the community college level this past season.

This will be Brown’s third year as a coach for the Lady Knights as she moves to the position of head coach. Before joining CCRI, she spent the 2010-11 season in her native Michigan as a member of the Flint Monarchs, a nationally ranked semi-professional basketball team.

Brown is no stranger to community college basketball. She played for two years at Labette Community College in Parsons, Kan., a Division I school. In 2007 and 2008, she was named an All-Conference and All-Region player. In 2006-07, she led the team in scoring with 15 points, five rebounds and five assists per game while scoring over 1,000 points in her two years at Labette.

After two years at Labette, Brown earned a scholarship to play for Florida Gulf Coast University, another Division I institution. She was part of winning team that compiled a 50-12 record over two seasons. The team was the two-time regular season Atlantic Sun champions and qualified for the Women’s National Tournament (WNIT) in 2008-09 and 2009-10. In 2010 she finished the season ranked seventh in 3-point field goal percentage (.368) in the A-Sun Conference. After Brown graduated she played semi-pro basketball for the Monarchs. This past year Brown played with a semi pro team in Boston, Mass., the Boston Bombers. Brown graduated from FGCU in 2010 with a degree in communications and a minor in journalism. She currently resides in Coventry.

“Brittany is an exceptional coach with desire and energy,” said CCRI Director of Athletics Joe Pavone. “She will make the transition smooth and seamless with her CCRI coaching and Division I player background. What a wonderful role model for our women’s basketball program.”
