Brunelle sets pair of records at RIC

Posted

It was a record-breaking Saturday for Pilgrim alumna Melanie Brunelle at the Boston University-hosted Scarlet and White Invitational as she set a pair of new high marks for Rhode Island College.

The freshman phenom set her first new school record of the day in the 500 meters, finishing fifth in the competition for the Anchorwomen with a time of one minute, 14.53 seconds.

Brunelle then turned her attentions to the field and the triple jump, an event in which she had already declared ownership of the RIC record with an effort of 11.49 meters set in Boston the previous week.

As an encore, the ex-Patriot improved on her previous best, rounding out the top five on the day with a new standard of 11.56 meters.

Brunelle also competed in the high jump, with her non-record clearance of the bar at 1.65 meters good enough for a new season’s best and second-place finish.

On the heels of her big day in the big city, Brunelle was tabbed by the Little East Conference on Monday as its women’s rookie field athlete of the week for the sixth time this season.

Pina leading Colonels in scoring

As the men’s basketball team at Curry College stares the very real possibility of a winless season in the face, former Pilgrim standout James Pina is trying his hardest to make sure that the 0-21 Colonels don’t finish the campaign at 0-25.

Since the turn of the calendar into 2016, Pina has become more and more the offensive focus for the Curry five, having scored in double figures in 10 straight games, dating back to a 76-69 defeat to the University of New England on Jan. 7.

The recent offensive outburst by the former Patriot has enabled him to edge his scoring average to 14.4 points per game, which now places him at the top of the heap among all Colonels players.

Pina has also been active on the boards, claiming an average of 6.7 rebounds per game, good for second on the team.

There are just four opportunities remaining this season for Curry to erase the nagging zero in the win column, with the first chance to do just that coming this Wednesday when they host Western New England before having to go on the road on Saturday to take on Nichols.

Gray helps Skyhawks to fifth-place finish

Toll Gate product Jordan Gray played her part in Stonehill’s distance medley relay triumph this past Saturday at the URI-hosted Coaches Tribute meet, with her effort helping the Skyhawks to a fifth-place overall finish in the team competition.

The former Titan standout ran the second and shortest leg in the relay, covering 400 meters in 57-and-a-half seconds, helping the Stonehill quartet to eventually cross the line in 11 minutes, 44.22 seconds.

The performance turned in by Gray and her teammates was at the time the fastest medley relay ran at the Division II level this season and earned the Skyhawk relay the Northeast-10 Conference’s women’s relay of the week award.
