‘Buddy’ rocks at Theatre-By-The-Sea

The recently air-conditioned barn theatre in Matunuck is rockin’ and rollin’ through June 19 with the music-filled “Buddy-The Buddy Holly Story.”

Michael Siktberg makes a strong, likable Buddy Holly, even if he doesn’t look or sound exactly like him. After all, how many audience members actually remember how he looked and sounded. (I do, having seen the rock star in person in the ’50s.)

The musical tells Buddy’s story from 1956 to 1959, when the rising rock star is killed in a plane crash, along with rockers Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper, the inspiration for Don McLean’s classic “American Pie.”

The evening is filled with great music from the ’50s, including Holly’s “That’ll Be the Day,” “Peggy Sue” and “Oh, Boy,” plus quite good renditions of the Big Bopper’s “Chantilly Lace” by JP Ferragamo and Valens’ “La Bamba” by Albert Jennings.

This was the golden age of rock radio, so we get a few singing commercials thrown in. While the plot is secondary to the music, there’s a great scene where Holly and the Crickets play Harlem’s Apollo Theatre, the first white group to grace the famous stage.

If you are a fan of the music of the ’50s, this is a show not to be missed. It runs a bit long, especially the closing scene, which mirrors Holly’s final concert before boarding the ill-fated plane. Stick around for a rockin’ encore.

Reservations at 782-6587. Tickets are $47-$67. Catch it before it closes on June 19 to make way for “West Side Story” and its classic music, opening June 22 and running through July 16.
