Buffet of theater at Black Box

Some things can be reduced to numbers; some can't. Jason is looking for a sign from God; Carrie is looking for a little help with the dishes. Claudia feels like her memories are being replaced with empty shelves. Jen wants you to know she is not a homeless person. Plus, a story about a certain Danish prince – only faster, funnier and a lot more Jewish.

The Black Box Theatre has lined up a buffet of theater for its spring production, which aims to satisfy an appetite for variety and for fresh, funny and sometimes moving glimpses into the human experience. Artists’ Exchange will showcase a collection of short one-act plays by award-winning playwright Mark Harvey Levine from March 22 through April 1 at the Black Box Theatre. The series, with the working title, “Play by Play,” features some of the shorter works of Levine, who was originally from Pittsburgh and currently lives in Pasadena. His works have been staged from New York to Seoul to Sydney to London. His plays “Superhero,” “Scripted” and “The Rental” have been staged previously at Artists’ Exchange as part of its 2010 and 2011 One Act Play Festivals. The Black Box Theatre has been Levine’s only Rhode Island venue.

“I find his writing to be always clever and often hysterical, and he has the rare ability to say quite a bit in a brief amount of time,” said Rich Morra, artistic director of The Black Box Theatre.

“Play by Play’s” lineup is as follows: “LA 8 AM,” “Up On The Roof,” “A Little Fresh Air,” “Misfortune,” “Nicole,” “Filthy Rich,” “Empty Shelves,” “The Order,” “A Birthday Party,” “Shades,” “A Nice Danish Boy,” “The Kiss,” “Cabfare for the Common Man” and “Two Minute Warning.”

“Play by Play” will open on Thursday, March 22 at 7 p.m. in the Black Box Theatre at Artists’ Exchange. Performances will be on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 7 p.m. with matinees on Sunday at 2 p.m. The last show is Sunday, April 1. All tickets are $15. Call 490-9475 for reservations. Artists’ Exchange is located at 50 Rolfe Square in Cranston. For more information, contact Christina Mealey at 490-9475.
