Donations for Fire Victims

Warwick North is devastated of the news of a fire at the Four Seasons Apartment Complex. At least two Warwick North families that have been either displaced or had loved ones displaced. A donation drive for all those affected will be held Monday, Wednesday and Thursday night 5-9 p.m. at the Westside Field House on Post Road (pit). Warwick North League representatives will be there collecting donations. They have set up a point person to make sure everything goes to those needing it. Items looking to be donated are gift cards, cash, new clothes (all sizes), slightly used clothes, toiletries, non-perishable food, toys, services, etc…with 24 families displaced everything and anything is helpful. Tri-City Elks

Tri-City Elks Lodge Custom Car show continues September 24. The car show is around the back of the building near the Tiki Bar. Food and beverages will be sold during the show. Music is also provided.

Country line dancing lessons continue every Monday from 7-9 p.m. Lori Enos is the instructor, and the cost is $6 per person. Proceeds to benefit Elks Charities.

Zumba lessons continue every Tuesday from 6-7 p.m. Lorraine Blanchard is the instructor. Come and burn some calories and enjoy the fun. Cost is $6 per person.

Warwick Figure Skaters Registration

Warwick Figure Skaters will hold open registration for their Fall-winter programs at Thayer Arena, 975 Sandy Lane, Sept. 26 from 12-2 p.m. Their learn to skate group lesson programs taught by professional instructors will begin Oct. 17.  Club information is available on www.warwickfs.org.

Book Study

A study of the book The Times of Their Lives, by James Deetz, about Plymouth Plantation from 1620-1690, will begin Sept. 26 as part of the Central Baptist Church Guy’s Group. Free Community Lunch

A free community lunch and food pantry will be held Sept. 26 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 111 West Shore Road, Warwick. Everyone is invited to participate.

Yard Sale

St. Michael’s Church, Smithfield, will hold a yard sale Sept. 26 in the parish hall at 80 Farnum Pike (RI 104) from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Items include toys, kitchen & household items, glassware, lamps, outdoor & sports equipment, books, small furniture, baby items, linens and Halloween and Christmas decorations. All are gently used items and some are even new.

Airport Progress Update

The Norwood Neighborhood Association invites you and your family to attend an interesting airport progress report presented by Kelly Fredericks, Airport CEO. He will present a visual presentation of the progress being made with the airport runway extension and related improvements. The community police officer will also provide a current update on crime activity in the neighborhood. The meeting will be held Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. at the Norwood Boys & Girls Club, 43 Frederick St. Everyone is welcome and refreshments and snacks will be served.

OSCIL Lunch & Learn Workshop

The Ocean State Center for Independent Living (OSCIL) will be hosting a Lunch and Learn Workshop Sept. 30 from 12-2 p.m. at the OSCIL office at 1944 Warwick Avenue, Warwick (the Beacon Center building). The topic is “Emergency Preparedness.” Erin McDonough from the RI Disaster Medical Assistance Team’s Medical Reserve Corps will discuss the importance of individuals with disabilities being prepared in case of an emergency situation. In addition, information on assistive devices will be shared after our speaker presentation. This workshop is part of OSCIL’s outreach and community education initiative. OSCIL offers these free Lunch and Learn workshops to highlight various solutions that can increase access in your home. Lunch will be served. Seating is limited. Call 738-1013 if you plan to attend. Narragansett Trout Unlimited

The Narragansett Chapter of Trout Unlimited (TU225) will host its regular monthly membership meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 30, starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Coventry/West Greenwich Elks Lodge, 42 Nooseneck Hill Road (Rte. 3, Exit 6 off of Rte. 95), West Greenwich. This will be the first indoor meeting for TU225 for the Fall 2015/Winter 2016 Season. At this meeting, TU225 members and guests will enjoy hearing about the “The Little Things” (seemingly the minor factors that can make a big difference in your fishing results) from Steve Culton, an experienced fly fishing guide, professional fly tyer, and freelance writer from neighboring Connecticut. Steve’s passions include fishing for trout, stripers, steelhead, and in small streams with wild brookie populations. One flyfishing rod and a variety of fly tying materials will be available. Chop Stick Auction

WAAAL’s 5th chop stick auction will be held Oct. 3 at the Pilgrim Senior Center, 27 Pilgrim Parkway, featuring over 75 prizes. Golden chop sticks are only $10 and gets you in all 75+ drawings. St. Rita’s Autumn Bazaar

St. Rita’s Church will be having an autumn bazaar Oct. 3 at the William Shields Post, 662 West Shore Road, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. They will have vendors featuring their custom crafts, a fantastic penny social, baked goods, 50/50 raffle, flea market and the kitchen will be open for goodies and lunch.

Suicide Public Forum

Suicide – so many questions. What can one do if a friend or family member seems suicidal? Is it OK to talk about suicide? How can I help prevent suicide? What are steps to recovery if I have lost a loved one to suicide? Samaritans of Rhode Island Executive Director Denise Panichas will lead a public forum to answer questions about suicide and about resources the Samaritans provide to Rhode Island’s coastal communities. Cranston Senior Guild

Cranston Senior Guild will meet Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 1 p.m. at Tamarisk Assisted Living, 3 Shalom Drive, Warwick. The versatile Vini Ames will entertain us with songs and music. Following the entertainment there will be a meeting, raffle, and refreshments. All men and women age 55 years plus are welcome to join our group. Cranston residency is not required. Cocktail Party

Conimicut Village Hunger Walk

We invite you and your organization to participate in the 2015 West Bay CROP Hunger Walk at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 18 in Conimicut Village. Hundreds of participants and teams from around the state will walk a 3-mile course through the village and down around the Point to raise money for and create awareness of those who go hungry in the U.S. and around the world. WMOA RI Open Juried Exhibit

Warwick Museum of Art (WMOA) is pleased to present the 29th Annual RI Open Juried Exhibit now through Oct. 24. This exhibit explores an array of mediums and subject matter and features 50+ original works by 32 artists from across the region. Juror Françoise M. Adult Basketball Leagues

Registration is now open for Boys & Girls Clubs of Warwick adult basketball leagues. The Boys and Girls Clubs of Warwick is a premier recreational basketball league includes stats for all games in addition to shirts, college referees, message boards and convenient location. Leagues are continuous, every 15 weeks for individuals and teams alike. Every league has a 12-game regular season schedule, plus best of three finals. League fees include jerseys. Support a new mother, share your experience and make a new friend. You can make a difference with just one hour a week. Moms for Moms/Families First RI helps pregnant women and new mothers deal with an enormous transition by matching them with trained volunteers who are mothers themselves. The program provides emotional and social support and strives to connect new moms to resources within their own communities. Mentors develop a warm, supportive relationship while spending time with the new mom in their homes, accompanying them on outings and attending mom gatherings. Aphasia Conversation Group

On the second Tuesday of each month from 6-7:30 p.m., Sargent Rehabilitation Center, 800 Quaker Lane, Warwick, holds an aphasia conversation group. Join the Pawtuxet Rangers Fife & Drum Corps of Warwick and continue the great tradition of Colonial/Revolutionary history through music. Fife and Drum Corps

The Kentish Guards Fife and Drum Corps rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 7-9 p.m. at the Kentish Guards Armory on Pierce St. in East Greenwich. Free lessons on playing the fife are provided to men and young men interested in joining the corps.

Grief Support

Evening Counseling Available

Help for Victims of Crime

Are you a victim of physical or sexual assault, domestic violence, untreated childhood abuse, or another crime or traumatic event? Volunteers Needed to Sew

Looking for something to do to help foster kids? Organizers of The Sewing Project to Help Foster Kids are looking for volunteers who want to help sew pillowcase or duffel bags for foster children. Currently their belongings are sometimes put in black trash bags. Foster parent Adriane Grimaldi in Scottsdale, Ariz. started the Sewing Project in February 2008 for children taken from their homes by Child Protective Services (CPS) to make kid-friendly bags for carrying their belongings instead of trash bags. To date, people have made 6,700 pillowcase bags for foster kids Pillowcase bags are delivered to CPS to use instead of trash bags. The Sewing Project has opened a new Rhode Island Chapter working with the Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) and is in need of volunteers to sew. Domestic Abuse Support Groups

The Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center is a non-profit agency providing services to victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault. The agency offers morning and evening support groups for adults dealing with current or past domestic abuse Groups provide a safe place to talk with others who have shared similar experiences. Free Health Care

Our Lady of Fatima Hospital has an outreach coordinator to assist women in getting free health care If you are between the ages of 40-64 and are underserved or uninsured, call Maria at 456-3105 for a confidential assessment. You may be eligible for free care including mammogram and gynecological care.

Old Warwick Grange #41

The Grange is a fraternal community service, non-profit organization with a special interest in rural life and the traditions of faith, patriotism, leadership and family values Grange where the whole family can go and grow Help them to help others The meetings are held on the third Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. No meetings in July or August. The Grange hall is located at 1175 West Shore Rd.

Developmental Screening

The Child Outreach Department of the Warwick Public Schools, in cooperation with the Volunteers of Warwick schools (VOWS), conducts regular preschool screening clinics. All Warwick preschool children between the ages of 3 and 5 are offered the Early Screening Inventory-Revised (ESI-R). This is a free service provided by the Warwick Public Schools. Participation in a Developmental Screening is a long established program of the Warwick School Department that provides families with information about their child’s development and offers information about community resources.
