Classic Movie Night

All You Can Eat Turkey Dinner

The First Congregational Church of Warwick, 715 Oakland Beach Ave., is having an all you can eat turkey dinner Nov. 14 from 4:30-7 p.m. Menu includes turkey, gravy, potatoes, turnip, squash, green beans, cranberry sauce, rolls & butter, homemade desserts, coffee and tea. Cost for adults is $14, children 12 years and under $5, children 5 years and under free. This supper sells out quick, so come early.

Ham & Bean Dinner

The Greater Warwick Lions Club is having a ham and bean dinner Nov. 14 at Pilgrim Lutheran Church, 1817 Warwick Ave. from 5-7 p.m. Cost is $10 per person, children under 10 $4. Menu includes ham, beans, cole slaw, macaroni salad, bread & butter, desserts, coffee and cold drinks. All proceeds benefit Lions Club charities. Pasta Dinner

A pasta dinner will be held Nov. 14 from 12-6 p.m. at the Oakland Beach Fireman’s Club. Tickets will be sold for $10; all the proceeds will go to the CEP Special Fund. Any donations would be appreciated. This event is hosted by Cailynn Leveillee for her senior project.

Temple Sinai Sisterhood

The Temple Sinai Sisterhood will host a fundraising activity at the Barnes and Noble bookstore Nov. 15 at 1350 Bald Hill Road in Warwick from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Shoppers will be able to purchase a voucher from members of the Sisterhood at the bookstore, and a portion of the net sale will be contributed to Temple Sinai.

SciFi Fundraiser for Art Scholarships

SciFi Fridays Fundraiser for Art Scholarships sponsored by Art Space PaVa Nov. 13 featuring “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” (1956) and Nov. 20 “Forbidden Planet (1956).  

Come laugh, learn and comment on these classic films at JONAH community Center, 830 Oakland Beach Ave. Movies start at 6 and are projected on an eight-foot screen with Bose sound. Donation is $2, children under 12 are free. For more information go to artspacepava.org.

We changed the date for Novembers’ meeting to the 18th. City Planner’s Update

The Norwood Neighborhood Association invites you to a general meeting Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. at the Norwood Boys & Girls Club, 43 Frederick Street. The community police officer will provide a community crime update report. The guest speaker will be Bill DePasquale, Warwick City Planner, who will present an interesting overview of major planning activity and related progress in the city. All are welcome and refreshments and snacks will be served.

The ADA – Know Your Rights

In honor of the 25th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in 2015, the Rhode Island Governor’s Commission on Disabilities & the Ocean State Center for Independent Living (OSCIL) is offering a presentation entitled “The ADA – Know Your Rights.” This presentation will take place Nov. 18 from 10 a.m.-12 noon at the OSCIL office at 1944 Warwick Ave. Issues addressed will include the following: accessibility, housing, state and local government, post-secondary education, service animals, alternate forms of communication and more. Friends of the Warwick Animal Shelter

The monthly meeting for Friends of the Warwick Animal Shelter will be held Nov. 19 at the Pilgrim Senior Center, 27 Pilgrim Parkway (behind Benny’s on Warwick Avenue and near Pilgrim High School) at 6:30 p.m. They will finalize plans for the bake sale on Nov. 21 and craft show on Dec. 5. Bake Sale to Help

Homeless Cats and Dogs

Friends of the Warwick Animal Shelter will hold its annual fall bake sale Nov. 21 at the Warwick Mall Community Booth, 400 Bald Hill Road, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Homemade pies, cakes, cupcakes, cookies, sweets etc. for people and homemade dog treats will be for sale. Also dog coats, dog beds and other animal related apparel will be available for purchase. Donations of baked goods will be accepted the morning of the sale at the Community Booth, located at the mall entrance to JC Penney. For more information call 467-2692 or 738-6322. All proceeds will benefit the homeless cats and dogs waiting for adoption at the Warwick Animal Shelter.

Fall Festival

Pilgrim Lutheran Church, 1817 Warwick Ave., is having a fall festival Nov. 21 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. featuring new and used treasures, books galore, handmade knitted and crocheted items, baked good and more. Come for lunch and buy a raffle ticket for great prizes.

Coat Drive

The Warwick Teachers Union is holding a coat drive through Nov. 25 to benefit Warwick families. They are collecting clean, gently used coats, hats, gloves and mittens to help neighbors and community. Collection boxes will be in every Warwick public school and the Warwick Teachers Union, 585 Jefferson Blvd., Warwick.

Free Winter Wear Giveaway

In observance of Buy Nothing Day, a winter wear giveaway will be held at Woodbury Union Church Nov. 27 from 10 a.m.-12 noon. Winter coats, vests, gloves, scarves and mittens will be collected from those who no longer need them and distributed to those who can use them. Donations in all sizes and in good condition are needed. Items may be dropped off at the church Wednesday through Friday from 10 a.m.-12 noon or brought the day of the giveaway. Fire Victims Fundraiser

A fundraiser to benefit the victims of the Four Seasons South fire will be held Dec. 2 from 6-10 p.m. at the Tri-City Elks Lodge on West Shore Road. The evening will include raffles, music and food. A donation of $15 at the door is requested. The fire started by a faulty exterior electrical box damaged 24 apartment units in the early morning hours of Sept. 19. Many tenants did not have insurance and lost their belongings, but fortunately there were no injuries. The Nelsons, one of those families that were burned out, are planning the fundraiser.

Cranston Senior Guild

The Cranston Senior Guild’s annual holiday party will be held Dec. 2 at West Valley Inn, 4 Blossom St., West Warwick, at 12 noon. Cost of the lunch is $21, which includes soup, salad, pasta, entree and dessert. Following the lunch there will be entertainment and a raffle. Men and women 55-plus are welcome to join the Senior Guild.  Reservations for the lunch must be made by Nov. 20. Family Performance Series

The holidays are here and the “Family Performance Series,” Artists’ Exchange’s newest family-friendly programming, is the perfect activity to entertain all of your family members for little to no cost.  Series performances began in September and will run through May 2016, with shows on Saturday mornings from 11 a.m.-12 pm at Theatre 82 & Café, located at 82 Rolfe Square in Cranston.  Admission is “Pay What You Can” with a suggested donation of $5.00 per person. Moms for Moms/Families First RI helps pregnant women and new mothers deal with an enormous transition by matching them with trained volunteers who are mothers themselves. The program provides emotional and social support and strives to connect new moms to resources within their own communities. Mentors develop a warm, supportive relationship while spending time with the new mom in their homes, accompanying them on outings and attending mom gatherings. On the second Tuesday of each month from 6-7:30 p.m., Sargent Rehabilitation Center, 800 Quaker Lane, Warwick, holds an aphasia conversation group. Bonniedale Farm in North Scituate offers dog and cat food at no cost to struggling pet owners, hoping to provide for the animals while easing the burden on community members facing tough times. Fife and Drum Corps

The Kentish Guards Fife and Drum Corps rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 7-9 p.m. at the Kentish Guards Armory on Pierce St. in East Greenwich. Free lessons on playing the fife are provided to men and young men interested in joining the corps.

Evening Counseling Available

Help for Victims of Crime

Are you a victim of physical or sexual assault, domestic violence, untreated childhood abuse, or another crime or traumatic event? Volunteers Needed to Sew

Looking for something to do to help foster kids? Organizers of The Sewing Project to Help Foster Kids are looking for volunteers who want to help sew pillowcase or duffel bags for foster children. Currently their belongings are sometimes put in black trash bags. Foster parent Adriane Grimaldi in Scottsdale, Ariz. started the Sewing Project in February 2008 for children taken from their homes by Child Protective Services (CPS) to make kid-friendly bags for carrying their belongings instead of trash bags. To date, people have made 6,700 pillowcase bags for foster kids Pillowcase bags are delivered to CPS to use instead of trash bags. The Sewing Project has opened a new Rhode Island Chapter working with the Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) and is in need of volunteers to sew. Domestic Abuse Support Groups

The Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center is a non-profit agency providing services to victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault. The agency offers morning and evening support groups for adults dealing with current or past domestic abuse Groups provide a safe place to talk with others who have shared similar experiences. Free Health Care

Our Lady of Fatima Hospital has an outreach coordinator to assist women in getting free health care If you are between the ages of 40-64 and are underserved or uninsured, call Maria at 456-3105 for a confidential assessment. You may be eligible for free care including mammogram and gynecological care.

Old Warwick Grange #41

The Grange is a fraternal community service, non-profit organization with a special interest in rural life and the traditions of faith, patriotism, leadership and family values Grange where the whole family can go and grow Help them to help others The meetings are held on the third Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. No meetings in July or August. The Grange hall is located at 1175 West Shore Rd.

Developmental Screening

The Child Outreach Department of the Warwick Public Schools, in cooperation with the Volunteers of Warwick schools (VOWS), conducts regular preschool screening clinics. All Warwick preschool children between the ages of 3 and 5 are offered the Early Screening Inventory-Revised (ESI-R). This is a free service provided by the Warwick Public Schools. Participation in a Developmental Screening is a long established program of the Warwick School Department that provides families with information about their child’s development and offers information about community resources. For more information, or to arrange a clinic appointment for your preschool aged child, call the VOWS office at 734-3230.
