Tri-City Elks

Country line dance lessons are back. Classes will begin May 9 from 7-8:30 p.m. They will be held every Monday with instructor Paul. Classes are $6 per person, and proceeds will go to Elk charities. Come and meet Paul and enjoy learning country line dancing.

Zumba lessons continue every Tuesday from 6-7 p.m. Lorraine Blanchard is the instructor. Come and burn some calories and enjoy the fun. Cost is $6 per person.

Healthy Babies, Happy Moms Inc., 4512 Post Road, East Greenwich, is holding several support groups for new mother.

Breastfeeding Class May 7 from 9-10:30 a.m. This class is designed to help you get breastfeeding off to a good start and feel confident about feeding your baby. Understanding Infant Sleep Class May 10 from 7-9:30 p.m. When and how long you sleep can change when your baby is born and for some, this is harder adjustment than for others. Moms of Multiples Support Group May 21 from 10-11:30 a.m. A great opportunity to meet and talk with nurses who are also moms of multiples. Get to know other moms of twins and triplets. Come with or without your babies. Spouses welcome.

Ocean State Toastmasters

Ocean State Toastmasters will hold its next meeting May 3 from 7-9 p.m. at Warwick City Hall, 3275 Post Road.

Regular meetings are held on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. The club is one of 13,500 in Toastmasters International, a nonprofit, educational organization devoted to the development of public speaking and leadership skills. Pasta & Meatball Dinner

The Pet Refuge is sponsoring a pasta & meatball dinner May 7 at the American Legion Post 15, 1016 Main Street, East Greenwich. Crafting for Critters Craft Fair

The 4th Annual Crafting for Critters Spring Craft Fair will be held May 7 at the Buttonwoods Community Center, 3027 West Shore Road, Warwick, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Hosted by Friends of the Warwick Animal Shelter, over 40 vendors will be selling their work just in time for Mother’s Day. Products for sale include sterling silver jewelry, crafts, fine art including pairing and photography, handmade chocolates and candles, handcrafted accessories, apparel, housewares, baked goods, all natural dog treats and more. Oakland Beach Association Meeting

The next meeting of the Oakland Beach Association will be held May 12 at 7 p.m. at the JONAH Community Center, 830 Oakland Beach Avenue. Please make every effort to join them. The meeting is open to the whole Oakland Beach community. This month they will have David Picozzi, Director of Public Works and Interim Chief of Staff, as a guest speaker. SPRED Liturgy

St. Benedict Parish, 135 Beach Ave., will hold a SPRED Liturgy at the 4 p.m. Mass May 14. SPRED (Special Religious Development) is a religious program for the physically and mentally challenged. They have special friends from St. Benedict, St. Kevin, St. Timothy, St Mary, Cranston, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Gregory the Great and St. Francis De Sales that will be preparing the altar and bringing the gifts during the Mass. Free Lunch

As part of a community outreach program Spring Green Memorial Church is offering a free lunch to neighbors in the community May 15 from 12-1 p.m. They  also have a limited number of food pantry items available. Catholic School Scholarships

The Knights of Columbus Warwick Council #2295 is offering $500 Catholic elementary school scholarships to three students in each of the three Catholic elementary schools in Warwick (St. Kevin’s, St. Rose of Lima and St. Peter’s). Scholarship awards for the 2016-17 academic year will be awarded for a one-year term, and children will need to reapply each year if they wish to continue receiving the awards. Voices of RI

The Voices of RI chapter of the Colon Cancer Alliance will hold their next monthly meeting May 16 at 7 p.m. in the small meeting room of the Warwick Public Library, 600 Sandy Lane, Warwick. Book & Plant Sale 

The annual spring book sale and plant sale at Pontiac Free Library, 101 Greenwich Ave., will be held May 21 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. A variety of books and seedlings of many types will be available for purchase between. The plants for sale are chemically-free grown seedlings from Blue Skys Flower Farm in Cranston and will include a variety of herb, vegetable and flower starts. Stop, Drop & Bowl For Burns

The Providence Firefighters Burn Foundation 501(c)(3) will be hosting their 2nd annual Bowling Tournament May 22 at Lang’s Bowlarama in Cranston. The cost to participate in the event is $35, which includes shoe rental, three games of bowling, a t-shirt and two drink tickets. Also, they will be having raffles and silent auctions. Indoor Yard Sale

On June 4 at 8 a.m., Spring Green Memorial Church invites you to a neighborhood indoor /outdoor yard sale. Tables/space (for outside) are available to rent for $25 (payable at the church office) upon signing up. You keep your proceeds. The trustees will accept donated items for the indoor sale. Proceeds from the indoor sale will benefit the trustee fund of Spring Green. This is a great opportunity to bring your “trash” and make it into someone’s “treasure.” The WIGS women’s group will have a table of jewelry items “plus” for sale. The Spring Green Social Committee will have muffins, pastries and coffee available during the morning and hot dogs, hamburgers, chips and cookies and soda for the lunch hour at very reasonable prices. Title I Preschool Registration

The Title I Office for Warwick Public Schools announced that Preschool registration for the 2016/2017 school year has started. The preschool program is fully funded through Title I. The program will run four half days each week with a parent component every other Friday. They are offering a morning or an afternoon session. Parents are required to attend every other Friday for informative workshops to support family learning and kindergarten readiness. All in a Chord

All in a Chord (AIAC), the barbershop chorus of women from all over Rhode Island, is seeking to recruit women 18 years old and older who love to sing. Unlike some choruses, AIAC does not do competition, or buy expensive costumes. There are low monthly dues to meet expenses. AIAC is a friendly group of 25 women that loves to sing and entertain. Support a new mother, share your experience and make a new friend. You can make a difference with just one hour a week. Moms for Moms/Families First RI helps pregnant women and new mothers deal with an enormous transition by matching them with trained volunteers who are mothers themselves. The program provides emotional and social support and strives to connect new moms to resources within their own communities. Mentors develop a warm, supportive relationship while spending time with the new mom in their homes, accompanying them on outings and attending mom gatherings. Fife and Drum Corps

The Kentish Guards Fife and Drum Corps rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 7-9 p.m. at the Kentish Guards Armory on Pierce St. in East Greenwich. Free lessons on playing the fife are provided to men and young men interested in joining the corps.

Evening Counseling Available

Volunteers Needed to Sew

Looking for something to do to help foster kids? Organizers of The Sewing Project to Help Foster Kids are looking for volunteers who want to help sew pillowcase or duffel bags for foster children. Currently their belongings are sometimes put in black trash bags. Foster parent Adriane Grimaldi in Scottsdale, Ariz. started the Sewing Project in February 2008 for children taken from their homes by Child Protective Services (CPS) to make kid-friendly bags for carrying their belongings instead of trash bags. To date, people have made 6,700 pillowcase bags for foster kids Pillowcase bags are delivered to CPS to use instead of trash bags. The Sewing Project has opened a new Rhode Island Chapter working with the Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) and is in need of volunteers to sew. Domestic Abuse Support Groups

The Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center is a non-profit agency providing services to victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault. The agency offers morning and evening support groups for adults dealing with current or past domestic abuse Groups provide a safe place to talk with others who have shared similar experiences. Free Health Care

Our Lady of Fatima Hospital has an outreach coordinator to assist women in getting free health care If you are between the ages of 40-64 and are underserved or uninsured, call Maria at 456-3105 for a confidential assessment. You may be eligible for free care including mammogram and gynecological care.

The Child Outreach Department of the Warwick Public Schools, in cooperation with the Volunteers of Warwick schools (VOWS), conducts regular preschool screening clinics. All Warwick preschool children between the ages of 3 and 5 are offered the Early Screening Inventory-Revised (ESI-R). This is a free service provided by the Warwick Public Schools. Participation in a Developmental Screening is a long established program of the Warwick School Department that provides families with information about their child’s development and offers information about community resources.
