Tri-City Elks

Car shows continue every Thursday evening at 5 p.m. in the back of the lodge near the Tiki Bar. Come show off your car and enjoy music by Bob Caramante. Have a cold beverage at the Tiki Bar and perhaps a sandwich for dinner.

Country line dancing will be suspended for the month of August. The classes will resume on September 12.

Zumba lessons are suspended for the months of July and August. Watch for start up date in the fall.

Warwick Concert Series

The Warwick Summer Concert Series continues with Bayside Beat playing at Conimicut Point Park Aug. 10 from 6:30-8 p.m.  Bring a blanket or chair and enjoy a great evening of classic rock and country music while overlooking one of the most beautiful views of the bay.

Conimicut Craft Fair

The Annual Conimicut Summer Craft Fair is scheduled Aug. 13 from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. at Conimicut Point Park, 1 Point Avenue. Rhode Island International

Film Festival

Enjoy a night of fabulous films when the Rhode Island International Film Festival comes to Warwick Public Library Aug. 13 at 7 p.m. See a selection of the festival’s very best short films, including a mix of crowd-pleasers and just plain excellent movies. All RIIFF shorts are eligible for the Academy Awards, and over the years many have received Oscar nominations. The Rhode Island International Film Festival opens on Aug. 9 at the Providence Performing Arts Center and runs from Aug. 9-14. For more information call 739-5440 x221. Car Show

A car show will be held Aug. 13 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at Town Hall, 1670 Flat River Road, Coventry. Guest emcee will be Cruisin Bruce Palmer. Gift baskets, hundreds of dollars worth of lottery tickets, and a 50/50 will be raffled off. Plenty of food, and the National Guard will have a climbing rock wall for the kids, plus Touch a Truck. Admission will be one non-perishable food item. Parking is free. Rain date will be Aug. 14. Sponsored by the Celebrating Coventry Committee.

Sept 7 from 7-8 pm at the Warwick Public Library, the Warwick Historical Society, Friends of Warwick Ponds and Henry Brown have worked together to bring you a talk on Warwick Pond Neighborhoods. Come listen to the stories and the history of Warwick Pond neighborhoods, which include Chatham Village, Hoxsie, Lake Shore Drive, Spring Green and the airport. Henry Brown, the Warwick historian, will be speaking about these villages from the late 1800s and early 1900s. Historic photos and maps will be on display at the library.

The Warwick Historical Society has, over the years, acquired archival collections, which provide primary source materials for those interested in researching or writing about the history of the city. Our collections include family histories, maps, local publications, books, photographs and much more. The research library provides workstations and copy machines for your convenience. The Warwick Historical Society is open to the public weekly from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Wednesdays and the second Saturday of the month.

Picnic & Bolo Raffle

William Shields Jr. American Legion Post 43 is holding its 14th annual picnic and bolo raffle Aug. 14 from 12-5 p.m. at 662 West Shore Road. Menu includes French fries, hamburgers, hotdogs, potato salad, spaghetti salad, baked beans, deviled eggs, watermelon, fruit punch, broccoli salad, cole slaw, pickles and cucumber salad. Historic Cemeteries

Join the Warwick Historic Cemeteries Commission to learn about Warwick’s historic cemeteries at Warwick Public Library Aug. 17 at 7 p.m. The City of Warwick has 166 historic cemeteries. Some are hidden, some are related to historic events like the Civil War, and others are the resting places of interesting people. Discover how to locate historic cemeteries from maps and deeds. Explore the symbolic imagery on historic headstones and find out much more when Mark Brown, Sue Cabeceiras, Cindy Corkum, Peggy Malcolm, Colin Parkhurst and Maria Pease present a fact-filled session. The Warwick Historic Cemeteries Commission is charged with keeping an inventory of Warwick’s historic cemeteries and provides care, including cleaning and the repair of headstones. The Rock in the Village

Community Summer Choir

Sing alongside veteran musicians in an encouraging, low-pressure environment. Have fun singing music you love under the direction of professional staff - all for free. Save the Bay Coastal Cleanup

Save The Bay is recruiting volunteers to serve as site leaders for its 2016 International Coastal Cleanup. In particular, the organization is looking for site leaders who can help identify and lead cleanups at small neighborhood beaches, fishing areas, boat launches and rights of way. The official date of the International Coastal Cleanup is Sept. 17, but cleanups held anytime during September or October can be counted as part of the global event. All in a Chord

All in a Chord (AIAC), the barbershop chorus of women from all over Rhode Island, is seeking to recruit women 18 years old and older who love to sing. Unlike some choruses, AIAC does not do competition, or buy expensive costumes. There are low monthly dues to meet expenses. AIAC is a friendly group of 25 women that loves to sing and entertain. AIAC sings at social events, senior centers, libraries, birthday parties, PawSox games, etc. Members do not need to know how to read music, but only be able to carry a tune on key. Moms for Moms/Families First RI helps pregnant women and new mothers deal with an enormous transition by matching them with trained volunteers who are mothers themselves. The program provides emotional and social support and strives to connect new moms to resources within their own communities. Mentors develop a warm, supportive relationship while spending time with the new mom in their homes, accompanying them on outings and attending mom gatherings. Fife and Drum Corps

The Kentish Guards Fife and Drum Corps rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 7-9 p.m. at the Kentish Guards Armory on Pierce St. in East Greenwich. Free lessons on playing the fife are provided to men and young men interested in joining the corps.

Help for Victims of Crime

Are you a victim of physical or sexual assault, domestic violence, untreated childhood abuse, or another crime or traumatic event? Are you experiencing depression, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, increased substance use or other emotional difficulties? Volunteers Needed to Sew

Looking for something to do to help foster kids? Organizers of The Sewing Project to Help Foster Kids are looking for volunteers who want to help sew pillowcase or duffel bags for foster children. Currently their belongings are sometimes put in black trash bags. Foster parent Adriane Grimaldi in Scottsdale, Ariz. started the Sewing Project in February 2008 for children taken from their homes by Child Protective Services (CPS) to make kid-friendly bags for carrying their belongings instead of trash bags. To date, people have made 6,700 pillowcase bags for foster kids Pillowcase bags are delivered to CPS to use instead of trash bags. The Sewing Project has opened a new Rhode Island Chapter working with the Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) and is in need of volunteers to sew. Cornerstone Church

Domestic Abuse Support Groups

The Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center is a non-profit agency providing services to victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault. The agency offers morning and evening support groups for adults dealing with current or past domestic abuse Groups provide a safe place to talk with others who have shared similar experiences. Developmental Screening

The Child Outreach Department of the Warwick Public Schools, in cooperation with the Volunteers of Warwick schools (VOWS), conducts regular preschool screening clinics. All Warwick preschool children between the ages of 3 and 5 are offered the Early Screening Inventory-Revised (ESI-R). This is a free service provided by the Warwick Public Schools. Participation in a Developmental Screening is a long established program of the Warwick School Department that provides families with information about their child’s development and offers information about community resources.
