Antiques & Collectable Auction
The Tri City Elks will hold an auction this Saturday at noon of antiques and collectables at the club at 1919 West Shore Road. There will be a lunch menu and the event is open to the public. The public is also welcome to attend the Elks’ country line dancing held Monday evenings at 7 p.m. The charge for dancing is $5.
Girls Basketball Tryouts & Open Gym
Tryouts for all 2012 RI Breakers Girls teams are Sept. 22 and 29. Grades 5-8 registration is 6 p.m., grades 9-11 registration is 7:30 p.m. at CCRI Knight Campus, 400 East Ave., Warwick. Fall Prevention Balance Screenings
On Sept. 23 VNA of Care New England will support Rhode Island’s efforts to recognize National Falls Prevention Awareness Day. Rehabilitation staff from VNA Care New England will be at the Pilgrim Senior Center Sept. 23 at 10 a.m. to conduct a fall prevention balance screening. This program will also be held at 10 a.m. on Oct. 11 at the Buttonwoods Community Center, 3027 West Shore Rd.

Effects of Technology
Darrell M. West will deliver the 10th annual Alice Bobb Brendel Lecture at Brown University at 3 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 26. Part of the university’s 150th anniversary of its designation as a Federal Depository Library, the lecture will take place in Salomon Center Room 001 on the Campus Green and will be devoted to the topic of “How Technology is Transforming Government and Society”.
West previously was the John Hazen White Professor of Political Science and Public Policy at Brown and currently is Vice President of Governance Studies and Director of the Center for Technology Innovation at the Brookings Institution. A reception will follow the talk in the lobby outside of Salomon 001. The lecture is funded through a generous endowment gift from Donald and Margaret Nuss Bobb ’51, brother and sister-in-law of Alice Bobb Brendel.
Duckpin Youth Bowling
Warwick PAL and Meadowbrook Lanes sponsor Duckpin Youth Bowling Leagues on Saturday mornings at 9 a.m. Open to all children from ages 7-21 years of age. Shape UP RI Family Challenge
Shape Up RI will launch a new Family Challenge, a six-week competition, Oct. 3 that runs through Nov. 13. Participants can register online at www.shapeupri.org. Though the new program is a special effort by Shape Up RI to encourage families to lead healthier lifestyles, participants are permitted to form teams with non-family members such as friends and co-workers.
Shape Up RI Family Challenge allows teams to participate in one or more of the following categories: the “Pedometer Steps” category, teams track pedometer steps to see who can walk the most steps; Teams monitor the amount of fruit and vegetable consumed in the “Fruits and Vegetables” category; In the “Less Screen Time” category, teams limit the amount of time watching TV, playing with electronic hand-held devices, and on the computer and teams aim to eat the most meals together and work to improve eating habits in the “Meals Together” category.
Participants in the six-week Family Challenge can form teams of 2-10 members. The team registration fee is $39, which includes four pedometers. Additional pedometers are available. Registration also includes a PDF logbook and access to the online Team Tracker system to monitor daily progress; access to dozens of free events including the Opening Celebration, Nutrition Day, and a Shape Up StairWell Climb; weekly informational e-newsletter; and technical support.
Shape Up RI, which has received generous support from major sponsor Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Rhode Island, is a team-based wellness program that has enrolled over 230 companies and 65,000 participants over the past five years.
Blessing of Animals

Your World Up Close
The macro-photography class instructed by Warwick resident Shane Gutierrez will exhibit their work at the main branch of the Warwick Public Library on Sandy Lane through Oct. 30 in a show titled "Your World Up Close." The exhibited images all reveal subjects photographed at close range using macro photography, and show intriguing, and some surprising, points of view. An opening reception will be held at the library on Oct. 15 from 2-4 p.m.

Developmental Screening
The Child Outreach Department of the Warwick Public Schools, in cooperation with the Volunteers of Warwick schools (VOWS), conducts regular preschool screening clinics. All Warwick preschool children between the ages of 3 and 5 are offered the Early Screening Inventory-Revised (ESI-R). This is a free service provided by the Warwick Public Schools. Participation in a Developmental Screening is a long established program of the Warwick School Department that provides families with information about their child's development and offers information about community resources. The Donate Shop is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit thrift store that provides free clothing to families in crisis. Domestic Violence Volunteers
The Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center (EBCC) is currently seeking volunteers for their Speakers Bureau. All volunteers will be trained to provide outreach, as a representative of EBCC, to communities in their service area through attendance at health and community fairs and by fulfilling requests for informational speaking engagements.
