Academic Award Scholarships

The Greater Warwick Lions Club announces that its Academic & Community Achievement Award applications for 2013 are now available. This $500 scholarship is for high school seniors who are residents of Warwick. The Lions Club is dedicated to the concept of community service, and these awards are weighted towards students who have demonstrated a legacy of community service. Application deadline is May 15. To receive an application contact the guidance office at your school or request one in writing from Ron Bergeron, Scholarship Chairman, 106 Wilson Ave., Warwick, RI 02889.

Scholarships Applications

The James V. Johnson Memorial Scholarship, sponsored by JONAH Inc, are now available. Any graduating high school senior living in the Oakland Beach school district are eligible for the scholarship. Applications must be returned by May 22. For applications call Beverlee Sturdahl at 739-2219.

Pilgrim Senior Center Events

The Pilgrim Senior Enrichment Center, located at 27 Pilgrim Parkway, offers educational, nutritional and recreational programs to folks 55 years of age and older. The center is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Property Tax Relief

If you need assistance with preparing the 1040H form for Property Tax Relief, you can schedule an appointment with Kim at 468-4500. She will inform you of what paperwork to bring at the time of the appointment.

Zumba Gold

Have some fun with exercise and join the party. Zumba is a Latin-inspired, dance fitness class that incorporates international and Latin music with freeing, stress-relieving movements. It is great for the mind, body and soul; any age or fitness level is welcome. This class is held Tuesday mornings at 8:50 a.m. and the fee is $3 per class.

Zumba/Toning

This is a Zumba class using weights for toning and is held on Mondays at 6 p.m. and the fee is $45 for a 10-week session. You can register and pre-pay at the welcome desk. For more information call Holly at 468-4074.

Did you know most SCAs (sudden cardiac arrests) occur at home? Are you interested in learning CPR? Call Pat Seltzer RN at 468-4077 to register for this or any upcoming class.

Ceramics 12:30-3 p.m. Are you interested in trying something new? We have an instructor ready to guide you through a project or to just be there ready to help. This group meets Tuesdays at 12:30-3pm, $4 per class. No sign-up necessary.

Warwick Historical Society

The Warwick Historical Society meets weekly at the John Waterman Arnold House on Roger Williams Circle Wednesdays from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and every second Saturday of the month at 11 a.m-2 p.m. All are welcome and urged to become member and volunteer. Comedy Night

There will be a Comedy Night April 26 at the William Shields Post, 662 West Shore Road. Dinner served from 7:30-8:30 p.m., show starts at 8:30. Dinner menu includes chicken, mashed potato, green beans, salad and bread. $25 per person, for tickets call 737-9711 or see the bartender.

Community Lunch

There will be a free community lunch & food pantry, Saturday, April 27 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 111 West Shore Road, Warwick. All are welcome. Fundraiser Breakfast

Warwick Association for Affordable Assisted Living “At You Service” program is having a fundraiser breakfast at Dave’s Bar & Grille, 2339 Post Road, Warwick, April 27 from 7:30-10 a.m. Eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, waffles, breads, fruit, coffee, juice, custom omelets and more. &8 for adults, $5 for kids and under, babies under 2 are free. Huge Yard Sale

The Pet Refuge, a non-profit, no-kill animal shelter located on 500 Stony Lane, North Kingstown, is holding a huge yard sale Saturday, April 27 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Pet Refuge. Large selection of household items, small furniture, tools, designer clothes, costume jewelry, toys, DVDs, CDs, VHS tapes and lots of books. Something for everyone at great prices. Donations are greatly appreciated and can be dropped off at the Pet Refuge Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. For more information call the Pet Refuge at 294-1115.

Healthy Kids Day

Join in the fun at Healthy Kids Day, being held Saturday, April 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Kent County YMCA, 900 Centerville Road, Warwick. Enjoy indoor and outdoor activities with obstacle courses, dance, bounce houses, drumming, sports and games. Demos on healthy living will include nutrition, education, exercise, prevention and safety. Performers include interactive singer Julie Garnett from 10:15-10:55, storyteller/musician/cartoonist Keith Munslow from 11:30-12:20, and positive rapper James “Mr. Deep Positivity” McBride from 12:45-1:45 p.m. The event is open to all ages and is free of charge. Healthy Kids Day at the Kent County YMCA was made possible in part through a grant from South County Community Action Family Care Community Partnership and DCYF to the member agencies of the Warwick Coalition to Prevent Child Abuse.

Tri City Elks

Tri City Elks #14, 1519 West Shore Rd., Warwick, will be holding their 5th annual fishing derby for boys and girls ages 5-12 April 27 at 7 a.m. Stop in at the lodge after 3 p.m. to sign your kids up. A fishing pole will be awarded to the child who catches the largest fish and the child who catches the second largest. Fish weigh-in is at 11 a.m. Hotdogs, chips and soda will follow.

Swinging Squares

OSCIL Breakfast

The Ocean State Center for Independent Living (OSCIL) will be celebrating 25 years of service to the disability community at a celebratory breakfast to be held April 30 from 9-11 a.m. at the Radisson Airport Hotel, Warwick. The Honorable James Langevin, House of Representatives, will be the keynote speaker. The cost is $25 per person; tables of 10 are also available. Sponsorships are most welcome. The Village Singers

Charity Wine Tasting

A charity wine tasting will take place Friday, May 3 from 6:30-9 p.m. at Cranston Country Club, 69 Burlingame Road, Cranston. There will be exciting wines and great music at this year’s Annual Spring Fling Wine Tasting event. Proceeds benefit the Moms Helping Moms program of Families First RI. Moms Helping Moms connects pregnant women and new mothers with trained peer mentors who offer caring support and access to parenting information and resources. Cost is $35 per person. Here Again Band

On Saturday, May 4, Here Again Band will perform at Tri City Elks #14, 1519 West Shore Rd., Warwick from 8:30-11 p.m. Tickets are $6 at the door. Kitchen opens at 7:30.

Voices of RI

The Voices of RI chapter of the Colon Cancer Alliance will hold their next monthly meeting at 1 p.m. May 4 in the large meeting room of the Warwick Public Library, 600 Sandy Lane, Warwick.

Toy Yard Sale

The Armenian Evangelical Church, 180 Oaklawn Ave., Cranston, will hold their annual toy yard sale May 4 from 9 a.m.-12 noon. Choose from a wide variety of toys, books, games and tapes.

Bingo

A bingo will be held Saturday, May 4 at St. Kevin’s Church Hall, 333 Sandy Lane. Doors open at 5 p.m., bingo starts at 6. Fun, prizes and refreshments.

Daughters of Isabella

Ocean State Toastmasters

Ocean State Toastmasters will hold its next meeting Tuesday, May 7, from 7-9 p.m. at Warwick City Hall, 3275 Post Road. Ocean State Toastmasters holds its regular meetings on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. The club is one of 13,500 in Toastmasters International, a nonprofit, educational organization devoted to the development of public speaking and leadership skills.
