Pilgrim Senior Center Events

The Pilgrim Senior Enrichment Center, located at 27 Pilgrim Parkway, offers educational, nutritional and recreational programs to folks 55 years of age and older. The center is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Special events for May:

Mother’s Day Meal May 9 at 12 noon.

All meals require a reservation; call 468-4076.

The center is closed Monday, May 27, Memorial Day.

Zumba Gold: Have some fun with exercise and join the party. Zumba is a Latin-inspired, dance fitness class that incorporates international and Latin music with freeing, stress-relieving movements. It is great for the mind, body and soul; any age or fitness level is welcome. This class is held Tuesday mornings at 8:50 a.m. and the fee is $3 per class.

Zumba/Toning: This is a Zumba class using weights for toning and is held on Mondays at 6 p.m. and the fee is $45 for a 10-week session. You can register and pre-pay at the welcome desk. For more information call Holly at 468-4074.

Outdoor games on Thursdays at 10 a.m. weather permitting.

Did you know most SCAs (sudden cardiac arrests) occur at home? Are you interested in learning CPR? Call Pat Seltzer RN at 468-4077 to register for this or any upcoming class.

Ceramics 12:30-3 p.m. Are you interested in trying something new? We have an instructor ready to guide you through a project or to just be there ready to help. This group meets Tuesdays at 12:30-3pm, $4 per class. No sign-up necessary.

Cribbage League: New group looking for players. Will meet every Friday at 1 p.m.

Historical Society

The Warwick Historical Society meets weekly at the John Waterman Arnold House on Roger Williams Circle Wednesdays from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and every second Saturday of the month at 11 a.m-2 p.m. All are welcome and urged to become member and volunteer. Ocean State Toastmasters

Ocean State Toastmasters will hold its next meeting Tuesday, May 7 from 7-9 p.m. at Warwick City Hall, 3275 Post Road. Ocean State Toastmasters holds its regular meetings on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. The club is one of 13,500 in Toastmasters International, a nonprofit, educational organization devoted to the development of public speaking and leadership skills. Garden Club

The Chatham Village Garden Club will meet May 7 at 7 p.m. at the EBC House in Warwick. Karen Asher, a URI Master Gardner, will present a slide presentation on ecological gardening with Rhode Island native wildflowers.

Mayor’s Advisory Commission

Warwick’s Mayor’s Advisory Commission on Disabilities will meet Wednesday, May 8 from 4:30-5:30 p.m. at Warwick City Hall in City Council Chambers, 3275 Post Road, Warwick.

Mark King

Trudeau Memorial Center welcomes back Mary King in a musical celebration of Mother’s Day May 9 at 1:15 p.m. in the Patterson Building cafeteria. Mary’s diverse talents include harp, fiddle, percussion and vocals. Her melodies, both enchanting and unique, are sure to please all.

Spring Sale

The Trustees of Spring Green Memorial Church, 1350 Warwick Ave., invite you to attend their annual spring sale May 10 and 11 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. A variety of used saleable items are reasonably priced along with baked goods and clothing. Complimentary coffee and donuts will be provided on Friday and the café is open on Saturday for lunch and snacks. There is ample parking and the church is handicapped accessible.

Tri City Elks

On Saturday, May 11 from 8:30 p.m.-12:30 a.m.  Neal & the Vipers with Dave Howard will perform at Tri City Elks #14, 1519 West Shore Rd., Warwick. Cost is $6 donation at the door, kitchen opens at 7:30. Cash bar.

Yard Sale

The American Legion Auxiliary Post 15, 1016 Main St., East Greenwich, will hold a multi-family yard sale May 11 from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Round and long table available for $10. To reserve a table call Elaine at 829-7767. The kitchen will be open. There will also be a basket raffle and a scratch ticket raffle. Numbers will be called at 2 p.m.

Swinging Squares

Conimicut Village Association

The Conimicut Village Association’s next meeting will be held at 7 p.m. May 14 at the Community Police Station in the center of Conimicut Village on West Shore Road, where Officer Nelson Carreiro will discuss the decriminalization of the new marijuana law. All are welcome. Refreshments will be served.

Academic Award Scholarships

The Greater Warwick Lions Club announces that its Academic & Community Achievement Award applications for 2013 are now available. This $500 scholarship is for high school seniors who are residents of Warwick. The Lions Club is dedicated to the concept of community service, and these awards are weighted towards students who have demonstrated a legacy of community service. Application deadline is May 15. 5K Walk-A-Thon

A 5K Walk-A-Thon to benefit One Fund Boston will take place May 18 at 9 a.m.; registration is at 8:30 at the Roger Williams Park Boathouse. Registration forms are available at www.EastSideUrgentCareRI.com or by calling 861-3782. Cost is $25, with 100% of the proceeds to help victims of the Boston Marathon tragedy. There will also be activities for children, prizes and raffles. Leashed pets are welcome.

Norwood

Neighborhood

A general meeting will be held May 21 at 7 p.m. at the Norwood Boys & Girls Club, 43 Frederick St. The Warwick Police K9 Unit will present a very interesting demonstration featuring its two new K9-police dogs conducting criminal-tracking arrests along with demonstrating drug searching techniques. There will also be an update on the housing issues in Norwood. Refreshments will be served. All are welcome.

Applications

The James V. Johnson Memorial Scholarship, sponsored by JONAH Inc, are now available. Any graduating high school senior living in the Oakland Beach school district are eligible for the scholarship. Applications must be returned by May 22. For applications call Beverlee Sturdahl at 739-2219.

Steel Guitar Jam

The New England Steel Guitar Country will meet May 26 at Post 15, Main St., East Greenwich from 1-5 p.m. Band is Rhode Island Rednecks. Donation is $7.

One Act

Play Festival

Submissions are currently being accepted for the Artists’ Exchange 8th annual One Act Play Festival. For consideration, send submissions of one-act plays of all genres to Artists’ Exchange One Acts, 50 Rolfe Square, Cranston, RI 02910 or info@artists-exchange.org (Include name and title of play in subject line of email). The deadline for consideration for the 2013 festival is May 31. Be sure to include a cover page with your name, contact information (phone and email) and synopsis. Selections will be announced on the Artists’ Exchange website by July 1. The festival will take place July 12 through Aug. 4 at Theatre 82 in Cranston.

Watercolor Class

Tuesday, May 23 through June 27 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Bernadette Pace, an experienced instructor and well-known regional artist, will introduce students to basic techniques of watercolor painting learning to use the materials, blending colors, creating dynamic compositions and using watercolor to express creativity. These are encouraging and adventuresome classes for people 17 years and up who want to learn to paint, and students will start seeing things in a new way. Cost is $125 for 12 hours of instruction, and a materials list will be sent after registration. Registration is easy by phone with MasterCard or Visa, or stop by with cash or a check.
