Pilgrim Senior Center Events

The Pilgrim Senior Enrichment Center, located at 27 Pilgrim Parkway, offers educational, nutritional and recreational programs to folks 55 years of age and older. The center is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

The center is closed Monday, May 27, Memorial Day.

Zumba Gold: Have some fun with exercise and join the party. Zumba is a Latin-inspired, dance fitness class that incorporates international and Latin music with freeing, stress-relieving movements. It is great for the mind, body and soul; any age or fitness level is welcome. This class is held Tuesday mornings at 8:50 a.m. and the fee is $3 per class.

Zumba/Toning: This is a Zumba class using weights for toning and is held on Mondays at 6 p.m. and the fee is $45 for a 10-week session. You can register and pre-pay at the welcome desk. For more information call Holly at 468-4074.

Did you know most SCAs (sudden cardiac arrests) occur at home? Are you interested in learning CPR? Call Pat Seltzer RN at 468-4077 to register for this or any upcoming class.

Ceramics 12:30-3 p.m. Are you interested in trying something new? We have an instructor ready to guide you through a project or to just be there ready to help. This group meets Tuesdays at 12:30-3pm, $4 per class. No sign-up necessary.

Cribbage League: New group looking for players. Will meet every Friday at 1 p.m.

Warwick Historical Society

The Warwick Historical Society meets weekly at the John Waterman Arnold House on Roger Williams Circle Wednesdays from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and every second Saturday of the month at 11 a.m-2 p.m. All are welcome and urged to become member and volunteer. Friends of Warwick Animal Shelter

The monthly meeting of Friends of the Warwick Animal Shelter will be held May 16 at the Warwick Public Library, Sandy Lane, at 6:30 p.m. They will be discussing the upcoming Cause for Paws Antique Car Show on June 9. Public is invited. For more information call Brenda at 467-2692.

Honoring Our Heroes

Join St. Kevin Roman Catholic Parish, 333 Sandy Lane, May 17 at 7 p.m. as they salute our military, police and firefighters with a special Honoring Our Heroes. Guest speakers, posting of the colors and a musical program from St. Kevin School and Parish Choir. A free will offering will be taken for House of Hope CDC.

Garden Club

The Chatham Village Garden Club will have their annual plant sale May 18 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon at the Buttonwoods Community Center on West Shore Road.  Choose from a variety of perennials from the gardens of members at low prices. 

5K Walk-A-Thon

A 5K Walk-A-Thon to benefit One Fund Boston will take place May 18 at 9 a.m.; registration is at 8:30 at the Roger Williams Park Boathouse. Registration forms are available at www.EastSideUrgentCareRI.com or by calling 861-3782. Cost is $25, with 100% of the proceeds to help victims of the Boston Marathon tragedy. There will also be activities for children, prizes and raffles. Leashed pets are welcome.

Book & Plant Sale

The spring book sale and plant sale at the Pontiac Free Library, 101 Greenwich Ave., Warwick, will be held May 18 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. A variety of books and seedlings of many types will be available for purchase. The plants for sale are chemically-free grown seedlings from Blue Skys Flower Farm in Cranston and will include a variety of herbs, vegetable starts and flower starts. Warwick Historical Society

On Saturday, May 18 from 2-4 p.m. the Warwick Historical Society will have its annual open house at the John Waterman Arnold House, 25 Roger Williams Circle. See their display of Rocky Point memorabilia. Browse the selection of books for sale removed from their library. Admission is free and refreshments will be available.

Ministry Fair

St. Francis of Assisi Church, Jefferson Blvd., is inviting all parishioners to participate in a Ministry Fair - We Walk By Faith - to be held in the church portico after all Masses the weekend of May 18 and 19.

Norwood Neighborhood Association

A general meeting will be held May 21 at 7 p.m. at the Norwood Boys & Girls Club, 43 Frederick St. The Warwick Police K9 Unit will present a very interesting demonstration featuring its two new K9-police dogs conducting criminal-tracking arrests along with demonstrating drug searching techniques. There will also be an update on the housing issues in Norwood. Refreshments will be served. All are welcome.

Toastmasters

Ocean State Toastmasters will hold its next meeting Tuesday, May 21, from 7-9 p.m. at Warwick City Hall, 3275 Post Road. Ocean State Toastmasters holds its regular meetings on the first and third Tuesdays of each month.

The club is one 13,500 in Toastmasters International, a nonprofit, educational organization devoted to the development of public speaking and leadership skills. The organization has some 280,000 members in 116 countries. Ocean State Toastmasters is among the oldest clubs in Rhode Island and will celebrate its 50th anniversary in September. India Fund Benefit Dinner

The Trudeau Center, 3445 Post Road, Warwick, is holding an India Fund Benefit dinner in their rec building May 22 from 6-8 p.m. $15 for adults, $12 for children, 5 and under are free. Pasta and meatballs, salad, bread and beverages are included. Games and outdoor play will be available. All proceeds will go directly to building an orphanage home for orphans and widows in the village of K Nayakampalli in southeast India. Call Heidi at 575-7552 for tickets.

Scholarships Applications

The James V. Johnson Memorial Scholarship, sponsored by JONAH Inc, are now available. Any graduating high school senior living in the Oakland Beach school district are eligible for the scholarship. Applications must be returned by May 22. For applications call Beverlee Sturdahl at 739-2219.

Neighborhood Yard Sale

The Governor Francis Farms Annual Neighborhood Association Yard Sale begins at 7:30 a.m. May 25 at each individual neighborhood participant. Pick up a map of all yard sale locations at Le Favorite Bakery on Namquid Drive at Warwick Ave in the Governor Francis Shopping Center or at 18 Squantum Drive.

Memorial Day Observance

On Monday, May 27 at 9:30 a.m. the West Warwick Veterans Council will be holding their annual Memorial Day observance in West Warwick Memorial Park, 2 Legion Way. This event is open to the public. Members of the United States Armed Forces who have made the ultimate sacrifice will be honored. Guest speaker is Captain John Covell, USN retired.

Avenu e of Flags

The Avenue of Flags will be displayed May 25 through May 27 (Memorial Day weekend) at Pawtuxet Memorial Park, 100 Harrison Ave., Warwick, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. each day, weather permitting. This occasion salutes all our nation’s veterans living and deceased, who served proudly.

Steel Guitar Jam

The New England Steel Guitar Country will meet May 26 at Post 15, Main St., East Greenwich from 1-5 p.m. Band is Rhode Island Rednecks. Donation is $7.

One Act Play Festival

Submissions are currently being accepted for the Artists’ Exchange 8th annual One Act Play Festival. For consideration, send submissions of one-act plays of all genres to Artists’ Exchange One Acts, 50 Rolfe Square, Cranston, RI 02910 or info@artists-exchange.org (Include name and title of play in subject line of email). The deadline for consideration for the 2013 festival is May 31. Be sure to include a cover page with your name, contact information (phone and email) and synopsis. Selections will be announced on the Artists’ Exchange website by July 1. The festival will take place July 12 through Aug. 4 at Theatre 82 in Cranston.

Adult Watercolor Class for Beginners

Tuesday, May 23 through June 27 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Bernadette Pace, an experienced instructor and well-known regional artist, will introduce students to basic techniques of watercolor painting learning to use the materials, blending colors, creating dynamic compositions and using watercolor to express creativity. These are encouraging and adventuresome classes for people 17 years and up who want to learn to paint, and students will start seeing things in a new way. Cost is $125 for 12 hours of instruction, and a materials list will be sent after registration. Registration is easy by phone with MasterCard or Visa, or stop by with cash or a check. Bake Sale

The East Greenwich Animal Protection League will be at the Warwick Mall Community Booth for a bake sale on June 1 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Baked goods, homemade dog and cat items and many more wonderful items will be for sale. They will also have pictures of the cats and dogs that are available for adoption as well as information about the league. Dropoff of baked goods will be May 31st from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. at 60 Middle Road, East Greenwich, or June 1 after 10 a.m. at the Community Booth. EGAPL is a non-profit and all volunteer league. All proceeds will be used for the animals in their care.

Bingo

There will be a bingo June 1 at St. Kevin’s Church hall, 333 Sandy Lane. Doors open at 5 p.m., bingo starts at 6. Fun, prizes and refreshments.

Colon Cancer Alliance Meeting

The Voices of RI chapter of the Colon Cancer Alliance will hold their next monthly meeting June from 10-11:30 a.m. in the small meeting room of the Warwick Public Library, 600 Sandy Lane, Warwick. Rocky Hill School Reunion

Rocky Hill School will hold its annual Alumni Reunion June 1. This year’s celebration honors reunion classes ending in 3 and 8. All alumni, friends and faculty (present and past) are invited to attend. Daughters of Isabella

St. Benedict Circle #423 Daughters of Isabella will be celebrating their 85th anniversary June 2. Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. at St. Benedict Church, 134 Beach Ave., followed by a reception and dinner at 12:30 in the afternoon at Timmy’s Restaurant and Landing, One Bay Ave., Warwick. Free Concert

A free concert will be presented June 2 at 7 p.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church by the youth choirs of Tucker First United Methodist Church of Tucker, Ga., featuring choral and instrumental music. Car Show

The North Kingstown Lions Club 3rd Annual Car Show will be hosted this year by Tarbox Toyota at 3671 Quaker Lane (Rt.2) in North Kingstown. The car show will be Sunday, June 2 with a rain date of June 9 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. All makes and models are welcome with a car registration fee of $15 per car and spectators are asked for $1 donation. The RI Blood Center will be there with their blood mobile. They will have food, drinks and vendors; dash plaques, t-shirts, free giveaways and trophies to be awarded. Cause for Paws

The 6th annual “Cause for Paws” Classic Car Show will take place June 9 at the building known as 171 Service Place, located at 171 Service Rd. (off Jefferson Blvd.), Warwick (rain date is July 2). Antique cars, classic cars to 1989, rods, muscle cars and all-year Corvettes are invited to exhibit. Vehicle registration is from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, with free goodie bags and dash plaques to the first 100 entries. The entry fee is $15 per car. Spectators are free to roam the show. Enjoy oldies music by Cruisin’ Bruce Palmer. Trophies will be awarded at 2 p.m. in 28 classes, including Best of Show, Peoples Choice and Best Club Participation. There will be door prizes and raffles, including a 50/50 raffle. Bring a can of wet dog food or wet cat food for the shelter animals and receive an additional door prize ticket. Child Safety Fair

The Keeping Kids Safe Project will be hosting a free child safety fair in Warwick on June 15 to provide children with free fingerprints and photographs. The child safety organization will take a child ’s fingerprints and send them home directly with parents. Parents can use the record to turn directly over to authorities anywhere in the world to instantly aid in an investigation. There will also be community organizations present to provide safety information and entertainment for families. Join us at the Balise Nissan auto dealership at 1350 Post Road in Warwick from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday, June 15.

Art Camp for Children 6-12

July 8 through August 16 on weekdays from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Creative kids crave summer stimulation, and that’s what they’ll get with art workshops like Make a Monster, Painting, Jewelry Making, Drawing, Improv Comedy, Cartooning and more. Camp runs Monday to Friday with three weeklong workshops at 9-11, 11:30-1:30, 2-4. Workshops are taught by experienced instructors with emphasis on trying new materials, stretching imaginations and having fun in a safe, encouraging atmosphere.
