Warwick Historical Society

Food Pantry

The food pantry of Woodbury Union Church, Presbyterian on the corner of Beach Ave. and West Shore Road in Conimicut Village will be open Thursday, May 30 from 6:30-8 p.m. Limited food items will be given out to those in need of assistance. Please use the office entrance on Carlisle St. and bring a bag if possible.

One Act Play Festival

Submissions are currently being accepted for the Artists’ Exchange 8th annual One Act Play Festival. For consideration, send submissions of one-act plays of all genres to Artists’ Exchange One Acts, 50 Rolfe Square, Cranston, RI 02910 or info@artists-exchange.org (include name and title of play in subject line of email). The deadline for consideration for the 2013 festival is May 31. Be sure to include a cover page with your name, contact information (phone and email) and synopsis. Selections will be announced on the Artists’ Exchange website by July 1. The festival will take place July 12 through Aug. 4 at Theatre 82 in Cranston.

Bake Sale

The East Greenwich Animal Protection League will be at the Warwick Mall Community Booth for a bake sale on June 1 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Baked goods, homemade dog and cat items and many more wonderful items will be for sale. They will also have pictures of the cats and dogs that are available for adoption as well as information about the league. Dropoff of baked goods will be May 31 from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. at 60 Middle Road, East Greenwich, or June 1 after 10 a.m. at the Community Booth. EGAPL is a non-profit and all volunteer league. All proceeds will be used for the animals in their care.

Yard & Clothing Sale

Bingo

There will be a bingo June 1 at St. Kevin’s Church hall, 333 Sandy Lane. Doors open at 5 p.m., bingo starts at 6. Fun, prizes and refreshments.

Rocky Hill School Reunion

Rocky Hill School will hold its annual Alumni Reunion June 1. This year’s celebration honors reunion classes ending in 3 and 8. All alumni, friends and faculty (present and past) are invited to attend. Riding the Tide

The Buckeye Brook Coalition is going to be doing something a little different this year for its Riding the Tide paddle adventure. You are invited to participate in a paddle to celebrate R.I. Rivers Month June 1 at 7:30 a.m. The trip will involve a bit more paddling experience. It will involve a trip mostly in upper Narragansett Bay, not too far from shore. The trip will take 2½ to three hours. They will explore the Conimicut salt marsh and the shoreline from Conimicut Point to Rocky Point. Pre-registration is required. You must have experience in paddling on the open bay and be in good physical condition for this excursion. Participants must have their own vessel. Life jackets are required. Children’s Chorus Auditions

The Rhode Island Children’s Chorus, a music education and performance ensemble for children, will hold auditions for new members for the fall 2013 season Saturday, June 1 from 10 a.m.-12 noon at the RI Philharmonic Carter Center, 667 Waterman Ave., East Providence, and 2-4 p.m. at St. Luke’s Church,  99 Peirce St., East Greenwich. Auditions will also be held at the Carter Center in East Providence on Tuesday, June 11, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. and in East Greenwich at St. Luke’s Church on Thursday, June 6, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Boys and girls ages 7-16 years are welcome. St. Benedict Circle #423 Daughters of Isabella will be celebrating their 85th anniversary June 2. Free Concert

A free concert will be presented June 2 at 7 p.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church by the youth choirs of Tucker First United Methodist Church of Tucker, Ga., featuring choral and instrumental music. Memorial Concert

St. Catherine’s Church of Warwick will host a memorial concert in honor of Newtown, Conn. and Boston Marathon victims. St. Catherine’s music director, John Norigian, will lead voices and musicians from the parish and the community in a concert of classical and sacred music at 2:30 p.m. on June 2 at St. Catherine’s, 3252 Post Road, Warwick. Proceeds from free-will offerings will be used for non-violence workshops and training in local communities, presented by the University of Rhode Island Center for Non-violence and Peace Studies.

Car Show

The North Kingstown Lions Club 3rd Annual Car Show will be hosted this year by Tarbox Toyota at 3671 Quaker Lane (Rt. 2) in North Kingstown. Ocean State Toastmasters

Ocean State Toastmasters will hold its next meeting June 4 from 7-9 p.m. at Warwick City Hall, 3275 Post Road. Ocean State Toastmasters holds its regular meetings on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. The club is one of some 13,500 in Toastmasters International, a nonprofit, educational organization devoted to the development of public speaking and leadership skills. The organization has approximately 280,000 members in 116 countries. Ocean State Toastmasters is one of the oldest clubs in Rhode Island and will celebrate its 50th anniversary in September. Scouting Program

Cause for Paws

The 6th annual “Cause for Paws” Classic Car Show will take place June 9 at the building known as 171 Service Place, located at 171 Service Rd. (off Jefferson Blvd.), Warwick (rain date is July 2). Antique cars, classic cars to 1989, rods, muscle cars and all-year Corvettes are invited to exhibit. Vehicle registration is from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, with free goodie bags and dash plaques to the first 100 entries. The entry fee is $15 per car. Spectators are free to roam the show. Enjoy oldies music by Cruisin’ Bruce Palmer. Trophies will be awarded at 2 p.m. in 28 classes, including Best of Show, Peoples Choice and Best Club Participation. There will be door prizes and raffles, including a 50/50 raffle. Bring a can of wet dog food or wet cat food for the shelter animals and receive an additional door prize ticket. Bayside Beat Concert

There will be a concert to benefit the Conimicut Village Association June 8 at 7 p.m. The concert will take place at Woodbury Union Church at the corner of West Shore Road and Beach Avenue in Warwick. Entertainment will be provided by Bayside Beat, a classic rock band from the Village itself. The cost for admission is $5 and children under 12 are free. Refreshments will be served after the show. Walgreens is the sponsor of this event.

CVA Meeting

The next meeting of the Conimicut Village Association (CVA) will be Tuesday, June 11 at 7 p.m. at the Woodbury Union Church downstairs Friendship Room, where a demonstration of the Warwick Police Canine Unit will be presented. Refreshments will be served.

Child Safety Fair

The Keeping Kids Safe Project will be hosting a free child safety fair in Warwick on June 15 to provide children with free fingerprints and photographs. The child safety organization will take a child ’s fingerprints and send them home directly with parents. Parents can use the record to turn directly over to authorities anywhere in the world to instantly aid in an investigation. There will also be community organizations present to provide safety information and entertainment for families. The Conimicut Village Association will host its first annual community-wide yard sale Saturday, June 22 from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. Conimicut residents who would like to participate and get on the list should email leslie@i-networld.com with your address or should call 737-5559. CVA will consolidate all participating households onto one map, which will be handed out the day of the event. Maps will also be available for download from www.conimicutvillage.org after June 20. Adult Watercolor Class for Beginners

Tuesdays through June 27 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Bernadette Pace, an experienced instructor and well-known regional artist, will introduce students to basic techniques of watercolor painting learning to use the materials, blending colors, creating dynamic compositions and using watercolor to express creativity. These are encouraging and adventuresome classes for people 17 years and up who want to learn to paint, and students will start seeing things in a new way. Art Camp for Children 6-12

July 8 through August 16 on weekdays from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Creative kids crave summer stimulation, and that’s what they’ll get with art workshops like Make a Monster, Painting, Jewelry Making, Drawing, Improv Comedy, Cartooning and more. Camp runs Monday to Friday with three weeklong workshops at 9-11, 11:30-1:30, 2-4. The Village Singers
