Warwick Historical Society

The Warwick Historical Society meets weekly at the John Waterman Arnold House on Roger Williams Circle Wednesdays from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and every second Saturday of the month at 11 a.m-2 p.m. All are welcome and urged to become member and volunteer. Summer Art Camp

Kids crave creative stimulation, and Summer Art Camp will keep them busy. All workshops are taught by experienced instructors with emphasis on trying new materials, stretching imaginations and having fun in a safe, encouraging atmosphere. Other workshops also have openings so call for availability. Workshops are $80 each and a week of three workshops is $225 (a savings of $15). The Oakland Beach Association will hold its monthly meeting Thursday, Aug. 8, at 7 p.m., at 830 Oakland Beach Avenue. New members are welcome. Refreshments will be served.

Tin Cup Junior Camps

Tin Cup Golf Course & Driving Range in Coventry. August Camp: Fridays August 9, 16 and 23, 10 a.m.-noon. Ages 7 to 17 eligible. Family Picnic

Tri City Elks Lodge #14, 1915 West Shore Rd., Warwick, is having a family picnic Saturday, Aug. 10 at 12 noon. Advance tickets are $15 at the bar. Children under 5 get in free, ages 6-12 $5. Music by Here Again Band. Chowder, clam cakes burgers hotdogs, french fries, onion rings, corn and watermelon and games for the kids.

R.I. Lightning tryouts

RI Lightning is holding tryouts for their U18, U16 & U14 competitive travel teams. New players to the R.I. Lightning are strongly encouraged to attend tryouts on two days to give coaches the best opportunity to evaluate them. Tryouts U18 will be held Friday, Aug. 9 from 6-8 p.m.; tryouts for U16 & U18 will be held Sunday, Aug. 11 from 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at the Hank Soar Athletic Complex, 500 Prospect St., Pawtucket; U18, U16 & U14 will be held Tuesday, Aug. 13 from 6-8 p.m., Aug. 15 from 6-8 and Aug. 17 if needed for further evaluations at the North Country Club field, 261 North Country Club Dr., Warwick. Friends of the Warwick Animal Shelter

The monthly meeting for Friends of the Warwick Animal Shelter will be held Aug. 15 at the Warwick Public Library, Sandy Lane, Warwick, at 6:30 p.m. They will be updating what has happened since the June meeting and discussing the upcoming bake sale in September. Youth Employment Program

Westbay Community Action’s Education Services in Warwick will offer a summer youth employment program for young people ages 17 to 24. The program, which runs through Aug. 16, will cover work-readiness skills as well as work experience. Participants will work 20 hours a week and earn $7.75 an hour. The focus is environmental science. They will introduce beekeeping, tree stewardship and landscaping; they will not handle live bees. There will be one visit to a hive, and everyone will wear protective gear. Call 468-4065.

Jam Session

A jam session featuring Gary Hopp & Friends will take place Aug. 16 and Aug. 17 at 8 p.m. Musicians and music lovers alike are invited to this casual gathering, in which musicians will share their music and then transition to a jam style format. Art Camp for Children 6-12

Vendors Wanted

The Conimicut Village Association is looking for vendors for their Picnic at the Park scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 17 from noon until 5 p.m. Vendor cost is $25 for a 10’ x 10’ space. Vendors must supply their own tent/tables, etc. Call Paul at 737-5559 for information and an application. Space available by pre-payment only.

Norwood Family Block Party

The Norwood Neighborhood Association invites you and your family to attend a Family Block Party Aug. 17 from 12-4 p.m. at the Norwood Gazebo on Pawtuxet Avenue. Nick Rossi, local neighborhood musician, will perform pop and classic rock music. Delicious grilled food and refreshments will be available. Bring chairs and blankets. All are welcome. 

New England Steel Guitar

New England Steel Guitar will have country Aug. 18 at Post 15, Main St., East Greenwich, from 1-5 p.m. The band will be Branded. Donation is $7.

Girl Scouts Registration

Registration for Girl Scouts for the school year 2013-2014 can be done online at www.gsri.org. Girls entering kindergarten through grade 12 may register. Both renewal registrations and new registrations are accepted. All girls will be placed in troops during the summer and early fall.
