Warwick Historical Society

The Warwick Historical Society meets weekly at the John Waterman Arnold House on Roger Williams Circle Wednesdays from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and every second Saturday of the month at 11 a.m-2 p.m. All are welcome and urged to become member and volunteer. R.I. Lightning tryouts

RI Lightning is holding tryouts for their U18, U16 & U14 competitive travel teams. New players to the R.I. Lightning are strongly encouraged to attend tryouts on two days to give coaches the best opportunity to evaluate them. Tryouts for U18, U16 & U14 will be held Aug. 15 from 6-8 and Aug. 17 if needed for further evaluations at the North Country Club field, 261 North Country Club Dr., Warwick. Friends of the Warwick Animal Shelter

The monthly meeting for Friends of the Warwick Animal Shelter will be held Aug. 15 at the Warwick Public Library, Sandy Lane, Warwick, at 6:30 p.m. They will be updating what has happened since the June meeting and discussing the upcoming bake sale in September. Tin Cup Junior Camps

Tin Cup Golf Course & Driving Range in Coventry. August Camp: Fridays August 16 and 23, 10 a.m.-noon. Ages 7 to 17 eligible. All aspects of the game will be covered, including driving, full swing, pitching, chipping, putting, rules & etiquette. Fun tourney, lunch & prizes on final day of each camp. Jam Session

A jam session featuring Gary Hopp & Friends will take place Aug. 16 and Aug. 17 at 8 p.m. Musicians and music lovers alike are invited to this casual gathering, in which musicians will share their music and then transition to a jam style format. All styles welcome, heavy on rock, blues, soul, fusion and mash-ups. Tickets are $5 at the door. Theatre 82 is located at 82 Rolfe Square, Cranston. Art Camp for Children 6-12

There is an Art Camp for children ages 6-12 through August 16 on weekdays from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Creative kids crave summer stimulation, and that’s what they’ll get with art workshops like Make a monster, painting, jewelry making, drawing, improv comedy, cartooning and more. Camp runs Monday to Friday with three weeklong workshops at 9-11, 11:30-1:30, 2-4. Workshops are taught by experienced instructors with emphasis on trying new materials, stretching imaginations and having fun in a safe, encouraging atmosphere. Cost of each weeklong workshop is $80; cost for a week of three workshops is $225 (a savings of $15). Registration is easy by phone with MasterCard or Visa, or stop by with cash or check. Picnic & Craft Fair

The Conimicut Village Association is hosting a picnic and craft fair at Conimicut Point Park, Point Avenue, Warwick, Aug. 17 from 12 noon until 5 p.m. There will be both craft and food vendors on-site and there will also be live music . Come enjoy the cool breeze and panoramic views of Narragansett Bay at Conimicut Point Park. The park is located on the water and there are picnic benches, bathrooms, a sandy beach and a playground for children. You can pack your own picnic lunch or you can purchase food and drinks on-site. Bring a blanket or lawn chairs. There is no charge to enter the park or to use the facilities.

Vendors Wanted

The Conimicut Village Association is looking for vendors for their Picnic at the Park scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 17 from noon until 5 p.m. Vendor cost is $25 for a 10’ x 10’ space. Vendors must supply their own tent/tables, etc. Call Paul at 737-5559 for information and an application. Space available by pre-payment only.

Norwood Family Block Party

The Norwood Neighborhood Association invites you and your family to attend a Family Block Party Aug. 17 from 12-4 p.m. at the Norwood Gazebo on Pawtuxet Avenue. Nick Rossi, local neighborhood musician, will perform pop and classic rock music. Delicious grilled food and refreshments will be available. Bring chairs and blankets. All are welcome.

Mass on the Grass

Mass on the Grass will be held Aug. 17 at 5 p.m. at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 111 West Shore Road, Warwick. Bring your chair or blanket and a picnic supper. Mass will begin at 5. New England Steel Guitar

New England Steel Guitar will have country Aug. 18 at Post 15, Main St., East Greenwich, from 1-5 p.m. The band will be Branded. Donation is $7.

Gorton Orientation Nights

Gorton Junior High School will be hosting orientation nights for all incoming 7th grade students Monday, Aug. 19 and/or Tuesday, Aug. 20 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. They will be set up in front of the main office hallway, which is right at the main front entrance of the school. The students will receive their schedules, locker assignments, directions on how to open lockers and maps of the building. With the schedule and map in hand, families can see where the students’ rooms are located. This is a great opportunity for you and your child to take a look at the schedule and locations of the rooms in advance and to ask any questions. You will also be able to hand in the school physical/immunization forms if they are completed. The PTO will be accepting new membership on this evening, and they will have information on school fundraising events.

Lend A Hand Charity Golf Tournament

Lend A Hand Therapeutic Riding Foundation is hosting its 6th Annual Charity Golf Tournament at the Alpine Country Club, Cranston, August 19. Registration $150/individual golfer. Dunkin Donuts brunch 10:30 a.m., food and BBQ during play, Tuscan Antipasto Bar and hors d’oeuvres immediately following event. Competitions, raffles, silent auction and prizes, 50/50 drawing. Shotgun start at 12 noon. 50/50 tickets on sale now, don’t have to play to purchase. Pilgrim Orientation

The staff and students of Pilgrim High School invite the Class of 2017 and new students to orientation and an ice cream social Aug. 22 from 6:30-8 p.m. at the school. All incoming 9th graders will receive their schedule that evening and meet with student leaders as they tour the building and discuss what makes a Patriot successful. Parents are invited to the auditorium for a short program before all meet back for the ice cream social.

Spaghetti & Meatball Dinner

Enjoy a spaghetti and meatball meal while helping fulfill Jason’s lifelong dream of a trip to Disney World with his family. Jason has lived with cystic fibrosis. The event will be held Aug. 25 from 2-6 p.m. at the Fireman’s Oakland Beach Club, 645 Oakland Beach Ave. The menu will include spaghetti with sauce, meatballs, Italian bread, salad with dressing, dessert and coffee. There will be a cash bar, a 50/50 raffle and prize raffles. Adults cost $15, kids $10, kids under 6 eat free. All donations are accepted and appreciated. Call Artie at 256-9481 for questions.

Pilgrim Senior Center Trips

The Tuesday Pilgrim Senior Center singing group is sponsoring the following trips: Aug. 30, a seven-night cruise to Bermuda with ex-mayor Buddy Cianci. Also, a nine-night cruise to Puerto Rico, Bermuda, St. Marteen and Haiti on April 24-May 3. Call Diane at 738-8588 for prices.
