Warwick Historical Society

Pasta Dinner

 

There will be a scholarship fund pasta dinner in memory of Barbara Silva Sept. 22 from 12-6 p.m. at William Shields Post #43. Featured will be macaroni, baked chicken, bread, salad, coffee and dessert. Donations are $15 for adults, $7 for kids 6-12, kids under 6 eat free. There will be a 50/50 and other raffles. Warwick Figure Skaters

 

Warwick Figure Skaters will hold an open registration Sept. 21 from 10 a.m.-12 noon at Thayer Arena, 975 Sandy Lane, Warwick. Bake Sale

 

On Sept. 21 Friends of the Warwick Animal Shelter will hold a bake sale at the Community Booth at Warwick Mall from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. In addition to baked items we will also have t-shirts and sweatshirts for sale. New England Steel Guitar

The next scleroderma support group meeting is planned for Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. at Roger Williams Medical Center, 825 Chalkstone Ave., Providence, in the first floor treatment room. Taste of the Tour Exhibit

 

Warwick Museum of Art (WMOA), 3259 Post Road, is helping West Bay Open Studios (WBOS) celebrate the 5th anniversary of their popular Studio Tours with a “taste of the tour” exhibit that runs through Oct. 2. Original works by 23 WBOS artists will be showcased in the main gallery and at four special events that are open to the public free of charge. Tonight’s exhibit is WBOS Artist Demonstrations from 5-7 p.m. Warwick artist Carole Berren will demonstrate watercolors, and other artists will show how they create fused glass, photography, hand-lettering, plein air oil painting and fiber art. The Conimicut Village Association will be hosting its 2nd Community-Wide Tag Sale Oct. 4 from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Maps can be downloaded from www.conimicutvillage.org to the locations of those participating. Chopstick Auction

 

A chopstick auction for Warwick Association for Affordable Assisted Living (WAAAL) will be held Oct. 5 at the Pilgrim Senior Center, 27 Pilgrim Parkway. Doors open at 12 noon, auction starts at 1:15. A Golden Chop Stick for only $10 gets you in all 75 drawings and can be purchased in advance from a board member. They cannot be purchased at the door. Historic Cemetery Cleanup

 

Behind Picasso’s Pizza there is a historic cemetery, Warwick Cemetery #30 – called Hart Lot – at the end of Call St. in need of minor maintenance. Only one field stone can be seen. Brush and leaves have invaded the cemetery and need to be removed. Three Women Artists

 

Andrea Beall, Janice Sheehan Hodge and J.Marie Hansen invite the public to "Experience Autumn Through Art” Columbus Day weekend Oct. 11, 5-9 p.m. and Oct. 12, 2-6 p.m. The exhibit will be held in the historic village of Chepachet at the Glocester Heritage Society building, 1181 Putnam Pike (Rte. 44). Part of the proceeds will be donated to Glocester Heritage Society.

St. Rita’s Autumn Bazaar

 

St. Rita’s Women’s Club is having its annual Autumn Bazaar to be held at the church at 722 Oakland Beach Ave. Saturday, Oct. 12 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. There will be vendors, a penny social, a flea market (weather permitting), raffles, plus lunch will be available.

Pasta Dinner Fundraiser

 

Warwick National Little League is hosting a pasta dinner fundraiser in loving memory of Donald “Dutch” Dutchover Oct. 18 from 6 p.m.-12 midnight at the Knights of Columbus, 475 Sandy Lane. Dinner featuring pasta, meatballs, salad, bread and dessert will be served until 10:30. There also will be a 50/50, raffles and more. Cost is $15 for adults, $10 kids 5-12, 4 and under eat free. Kent Hospital Auxiliary Fashion Show

 

Kent Hospital Auxiliary will hold a fashion show on Oct. 26 at Quidnessett Country Club, North Kingstown. Luncheon will be served at 12 p.m. Fashions are provided by Coldwater Creek and Gown Town. Christmas in New York

 

On Saturday, Dec. 7, the Greenwich Bay Women’s Club is sponsoring a daytrip to New York City. Come see the Christmas lights, shop for the holidays, take in a play – it’s up to you. The bus leaves R.I. at 7 a.m. and will drop you off mid-town. Enjoy your day, then head for home without having to drive. The Village Singers

 

The Village Singers, an adult vocal ensemble, is seeking new members for all voice parts: soprano, alto, tenor and baritone. Donate Shop

 

The Donate Shop is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit thrift store that provides free clothing to families in crisis. They are an all-volunteer organization that relies solely on the support of the community to continue this endeavor. The shop has a new location at 400 Warwick Ave., Unit #14, between Dunkin Donuts and Shaw’s. Evening Counseling Available

 

If you are experiencing depression, anxiety or overwhelming stress coupled with an addiction to or dependence on drugs or alcohol, then The Kent Center’s new evening program may be right for you. The Kent Center is offering an intensive outpatient program for people battling co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. Are you a victim of physical or sexual assault, domestic violence, untreated childhood abuse, or another crime or traumatic event? Are you experiencing depression, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, increased substance use or other emotional difficulties? Volunteers Needed to Sew

 

Looking for something to do to help foster kids? Organizers of The Sewing Project to Help Foster Kids are looking for volunteers who want to help sew pillowcase or duffel bags for foster children. Currently their belongings are sometimes put in black trash bags. Foster parent Adriane Grimaldi in Scottsdale, Ariz. started the Sewing Projectin February 2008 for children taken from their homes by Child Protective Services (CPS) to make kid-friendly bags for carrying their belongings instead of trash bags. To date, people have made 6,700 pillowcase bags for foster kids. Pillowcase bags are delivered to CPS to use instead of trash bags. The Sewing Project has opened a new Rhode Island Chapter working with the Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) and is in need of volunteers to sew. Domestic Abuse Support Groups

 

The Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center is a non-profit agency providing services to victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault. The agency offers morning and evening support groups for adults dealing with current or past domestic abuse. Groups provide a safe place to talk with others who have shared similar experiences. Free Health Care

 

Our Lady of Fatima Hospital has an outreach coordinator to assist women in getting free health care. If you are between the ages of 40-64 and are underserved or uninsured, call Maria at 456-3105 for a confidential assessment. You may be eligible for free care including a mammogram and gynecological care.

Do you have an hour a week to spare? That’s all it takes to make a difference in the life of a child. Today’s children need positive, caring adult role models to help them develop confidence, self-esteem and a desire to stay in school. Old Warwick Grange #41

 

The Grange is a fraternal community service, non-profit organization with a special interest in rural life and the traditions of faith, patriotism, leadership and family values. Grange where the whole family can go and grow. Help them to help others. The meetings are held on the third Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. No meetings in July or August. The Grange hall is located at 1175 West Shore Rd.

Developmental Screening

 

The Child Outreach Department of the Warwick Public Schools, in cooperation with the Volunteers of Warwick schools (VOWS), conducts regular preschool screening clinics. All Warwick preschool children between the ages of 3 and 5 are offered the Early Screening Inventory-Revised (ESI-R). This is a free service provided by the Warwick Public Schools. Participation in a Developmental Screening is a long established program of the Warwick School Department that provides families with information about their child’s development and offers information about community resources.
