Warwick Historical Society

The Warwick Historical Society meets weekly at the John Waterman Arnold House on Roger Williams Circle Wednesdays from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and every second Saturday of the month at 11 a.m.-2 p.m. All are welcome and urged to become a member and volunteer. Tri City Elks Events

Bingo Feb. 21. Kitchen opens at 5 p.m., bingo starts at 6:30 p.m.

Young Neal & the Vipers and Dave Howard Feb. 28 at 8:30 p.m. $6 at the door.

Running through June 9, Tri-City Elks #14 will be holding beginner line dance classes every Monday night from 7-8:30 p.m. at 1915 West Shore Road. All ages are welcomed. Cost is $6 per person. For more information call Lori at 821-4361 or the lodge at 737-9510.

Ocean State Toastmasters to Meet

Ocean State Toastmasters will hold its next meeting Feb. 18 from 7-9 p.m. at Warwick City Hall, 3275 Post Road. Ocean State Toastmasters holds its regular meetings on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. The club is one of 13,500 in Toastmasters International, a nonprofit, educational organization devoted to the development of public speaking and leadership skills. The organization has approximately 280,000 members in 116 countries. Ocean State Toastmasters is one of the oldest clubs in Rhode Island and will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2013. Gaspee Seniors

On Feb. 18 the Gaspee Seniors will be meeting at 12:15 p.m. to play bingo at the Buttonwoods Community Center on West Shore Rd. Bring your markers. Call Mary Nolan 941-5507.

Sparrows Point Bingo

Sparrows Point III Residents Association, 355 Hardig Road, Warwick, is having a grand reopening celebration with bingo resuming Feb. 19 at 6 p.m. sharp. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. Entrance to our building is from Cowesett Road; follow the signs to visitors parking lot. Come and bring a friend and join the fun.

Mixed Media Art Class for Adults

Warwick-based artist Taylor Tererri, whose colorful works can be found at Hasbro Children’s Hospital and URI Health Services, will introduce students 17 and older to the process of combining various mediums like acrylic paint, watercolors, drawing and collage at Warwick Museum of Art, 3259 Post Road. Students will explore composition and use line, color, texture, pattern and symbolism to convey an artful message. The classes run through Feb. 20, Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 6-8 p.m. for three weeks. Friends of the Warwick Animal Shelter

The monthly meeting for Friends of the Warwick Animal Shelter will be held Feb. 20 at the Pilgrim Senior Center, 27 Pilgrim Parkway (behind Benny’s on Warwick Avenue and near Pilgrim High School) at 6:30 p.m. They will be discussing future fundraising events. Baked Ziti Supper

The First Congregational Church of Warwick, 715 Oakland Beach Ave, is having an all-you-can-eat baked ziti supper Feb. 22 from 4:30-7 p.m. Cost for adults is $8, $4 for children 12 years and under. Children under 5 are free. Come and enjoy good food, good company and great homemade desserts.

Venison and Game Dinner

The annual Boys and Girls Clubs of Warwick venison and game dinner is Feb. 23 at the Kelley Gazzero Post on Plainfield Pike, Cranston. Doors open at 12:30 p.m. and there is a cash bar. The proceeds of the event go to support the programs and staff of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Warwick. A great family-style meal of venison, wild boar, rabbit, etc...and great raffles, too. Guest Speaker from Social Security

A guest speaker from the Social Security Administration will be at H&R Block, 361 Reservoir Ave., Providence, Feb. 25 from 9-10 a.m. The presentation will cover Social Security benefits, retirement, Medicare, disability, divorce, spouse, widow, online and a Q & A at the end. Trout Unlimited Membership Meeting

Narragansett Trout Unlimited Chapter #225 will hold it February membership meeting Feb. 26 at the Coventry/West Greenwich Elks Lodge #2285, 42 Nooseneck Road, West Greenwich, starting at 7 p.m. Join in for a presentation by Steve Culton on “Wet Flies 10: The ancient and traditional art of subsurface fly fishing.” Steve will cover all the basics, including leader construction, fly types and selection, where to fish wets and presentation. Steve is an outdoors writer whose work has appeared in national publications. He is also a guide on Connecticut’s Farmington River and a professional fly tier. Love Medicine Exhibit

“Love Medicine,” a Native American art exhibit, will be at the Warwick Museum of Art, 3259 Post Road, now through March 1. Themes of family, passion and cultural identity are explored in this new exhibit of Native American art based on the award-winning novel “Love Medicine” by Louise Erdrich. Showcasing 43 works by 13 artists of the Narragansett, Wampanoag, Choctaw, Navajo, Chicksaw, Mexican Apache and Ojibwe tribes, the exhibit is a unique opportunity to explore traditional and contemporary works in various mediums – beadwork, painting, sculpture, woven and painted fabrics, photography, and ceremonial artifacts. For more information visit us on Facebook or at www.warwickmuseum.org.

Know What Medications

You Are Taking

West View Nursing and Rehabilitation Center will present the second lecture of this year, Brown Bag of Drugs: Know What Medications You Are Taking, March 11, at 239 Legris Ave., West Warwick. Learn the importance of your medications, signs and symptoms of concern, and an overview of why your medication has been prescribed for you. Additional pharmaceutical information and handouts will be provided. Speak with a registered pharmacist and have your questions answered. This is a free one-hour lecture. Men’s Senior Softball

Registration is now underway for men 57 and over to join the Warwick Senior Softball League. It is a recreational league whose priorities are fun, safety and friendly competition. You do not have to be a Warwick resident to join. All games (double headers) begin at 9 a.m. and are played at City Park in Warwick on Wednesday mornings. The application fee is $20. Deadline for registration is March 15. Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ocean State is holding a collection drive for gently used clothing and small household items. Donations help to raise funds to support mentoring programs for boys and girls throughout the state. They offer convenient free home pick-up of donations and provide a tax receipt. Community Service Scholarship

Available

The Greater Warwick Lions Club announces its annual Academic and Community Achievement Award. This $1,000 scholarship is available to Warwick high school seniors who have demonstrated an active involvement in community service. New Gallery Hours at WMOA

The main gallery at Warwick Museum of Art, 3259 Post Road, Warwick, is now open Tuesdays through Fridays 10 a.m.-5 p.m. so exhibits are available to school groups, home-school students and anyone who can stop by on their lunch hour. The main gallery is also open on Saturdays from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. for those who work during the week. Friday Comedy Shows

New for 2014,  the Bring Your Own Improv comedy troupe will perform two shows on Fridays at Warwick Museum of Art, 3259 Post Road: 7-8:30 p.m. Family-Friendly Comedy Show (G-rated laughs) and 9-10:30 p.m. Late Night Comedy Show (PG-13 rated laughs). Kick off your weekend with laughter when BYOI takes audience suggestions, comedy skits morph instantly and the actors react to the silliness onstage. Hi-Lo-Jack League

Aphasia Conversation Group

On the second Tuesday of each month from 6-7:30 p.m., Sargent Rehabilitation Center, 800 Quaker Lane, Warwick, holds an aphasia conversation group. This group provides a supportive meeting place for people with aphasia to socialize and share their communication challenges and strategies. There is no charge for participation.
