Warwick Historical Society

The Warwick Historical Society meets weekly at the John Waterman Arnold House on Roger Williams Circle Wednesdays from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and every second Saturday of the month at 11 a.m.-2 p.m. All are welcome and urged to become a member and volunteer. Winter Ball

The William Shields Jr. American Legion Post #43 Ways & Means Committee is sponsoring a winter ball Feb. 28 from 7 p.m. to 12 midnight. Dress is semi-formal and the ball will be held at the Post Home, 662 West Shore Road. Cost is $20 per person and everyone is invited to attend.

Tri City Elks Events

Young Neal & the Vipers and Dave Howard Feb. 28 at 8:30 p.m. $6 at the door.

Running through June 9, Tri-City Elks #14 will be holding beginner line dance classes every Monday night from 7-8:30 p.m. at 1915 West Shore Road. All ages are welcomed. Cost is $6 per person. For more information call Lori at 821-4361 or the lodge at 737-9510.

Bingo

Bingo will be held March 1 at St. Kevin’s Church Hall, 333 Sandy Lane, starting with a $75 special with the last special at $100. Doors open at 5 p.m., bingo starts at 6.

Memorial Talent Show

The Doug Thompson Memorial Talent Show will be held March 1 at 7 p.m. at Woodbury Union Church, Presbyterian, 58 Beach Ave. Tickets are $10 per person, $25 per family and may be purchased the night of the show.

Love Medicine Exhibit

“Love Medicine,” a Native American art exhibit, will be at the Warwick Museum of Art, 3259 Post Road, now through March 1. Themes of family, passion and cultural identity are explored in this new exhibit of Native American art based on the award-winning novel “Love Medicine” by Louise Erdrich. Showcasing 43 works by 13 artists of the Narragansett, Wampanoag, Choctaw, Navajo, Chicksaw, Mexican Apache and Ojibwe tribes, the exhibit is a unique opportunity to explore traditional and contemporary works in various mediums – beadwork, painting, sculpture, woven and painted fabrics, photography, and ceremonial artifacts. For more information visit us on Facebook or at www.warwickmuseum.org.

Support Groups at Christ Church

Those who are suffering from the loss of a loved one are welcome to come to one or all of the grief support sessions that will be held at the Christ Church Office Condo (61 Cedar Ave., Unit 6, East Greenwich) every Sunday from 2-4 p.m. beginning March 2 through June 1. The meetings will begin with a video featuring interviews with leading authors, counselors, speakers and pastors covering a variety of topics to help you deal with your grief, followed by discussion and sharing. The divorce group is a friendly, caring group of people who will walk alongside you through one of life’s most difficult experiences. The sessions are led by people who understand what you are going through and want to help. There will be a 30-40-minute video featuring top experts on divorce and recovery subjects, followed by a discussion and sharing time. Sessions will begin on March 4 from 6-7:30 p.m. and will meet at the Christ Church Office Condo through May 27. Daughters of Isabella

The St. Benedict Circle #423, Daughters of Isabella will hold a monthly business meeting March 3 at 7 p.m. in the parish library. All members are welcome. Refreshments will be served.

Getting Started Education Series

Family members, caregivers and friends of persons with Alzheimer’s disease or a related memory disorder, are invited to this four-part series to learn, discuss and prepare. You will meet others who share similar concerns and experience. The “Getting Started” education series will be held Tuesday nights through March at the Phyllis Siperstein Tamarisk Assisted Living Residence, 3 Shalom Dr., Warwick. Gaspee Seniors

On March 4 at 1 the Gaspee Seniors will celebrate Mardi Gras at the Buttonwoods Community Center with entertainment by Vinni Ames and Mary Nolan at 941-5507.

Keno Night

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 449, 197 Providence St., West Warwick, will hold a Keno Night sponsored by the Rhode Island Lottery March 7 from 6-8 p.m. This event features increased lottery payouts, raffles and free refreshments. For more information contact 828-9715.

Know What Medications You Are Taking

West View Nursing and Rehabilitation Center will present the second lecture of this year, Brown Bag of Drugs: Know What Medications You Are Taking, March 11, at 239 Legris Ave., West Warwick. Learn the importance of your medications, signs and symptoms of concern, and an overview of why your medication has been prescribed for you. Additional pharmaceutical information and handouts will be provided. Speak with a registered pharmacist and have your questions answered. This is a free one-hour lecture. It will be held at 10 a.m. and repeated again at 7 p.m. Call 828-9000 for registration. Everyone is welcome.

Ladies Auxiliary Meeting

Men’s Senior Softball

Registration is now underway for men 57 and over to join the Warwick Senior Softball League. It is a recreational league whose priorities are fun, safety and friendly competition. You do not have to be a Warwick resident to join. All games (double headers) begin at 9 a.m. and are played at City Park in Warwick on Wednesday mornings. The application fee is $20. Deadline for registration is March 15. Feeding Thousand of Children

On March 22 hundreds of Rhode Island community members will work to feed thousands of starving children in the developing world. Through a partnership between Christ Church and global hunger charity Feed My Starving Children (FMSC), volunteers will prepare 175,000 life-saving meals at an FMSC MobilePack event. The MobilePack will take place March 22 at Advantage Glass, 1560 Elmwood Ave., Cranston. Community members can support this MobilePack by making a donation to cover meal costs or by volunteering to package food at the event. They need to recruit 875 volunteers and raise 22 cents for each meal – $38,500 total – for this MobilePack. Adults and children (K and up) can volunteer on March 22. Benefit Concert & Dinner

The Mustard Seed Farm will be hosting a benefit concert and dinner beginning at 6 p.m. on March 29 at Rhodes on the Pawtuxet, 60 Rhodes Place, Cranston, sponsored by Cat Country to help support  our equine-assisted therapy program. The evening features blues legend, James Montgomery, Dynamic Sounds Unlimited, dinner/appetizer, silent auction, raffles and door prize. The Mustard Seed Farm will be operating a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in East Greenwich that is dedicated to providing equine-assisted therapy for veterans, families and developmentally-challenged children. One of the programs called The Seeds of Courage Program is designed specifically for providing equine-assisted therapy and activities for veterans and emergency responders to support them in personal and professional development. Their programs are designed to challenge, strengthen and enlighten. For tickets call 465-3511. $55 per person, $100 VIP and $25 children 12 and under.

Old England/New England Concert

Warwick Symphony Orchestra and West Bay Chorale will hold a concert March 29 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Kevin’s Church, 333 Sandy Lane, and March 30 at 3 p.m. at CCRI Knight Campus-Hackett Theater, 400 East Ave. Join music directors Catherine Gagnon and Amanda Santo in a celebration of music from Old England to New England – selections by British and American composers. Clothing Collection Drive

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ocean State is holding a collection drive for gently used clothing and small household items. Donations help to raise funds to support mentoring programs for boys and girls throughout the state. They offer convenient free home pick-up of donations and provide a tax receipt.
