Warwick Historical Society

The Warwick Historical Society meets weekly at the John Waterman Arnold House on Roger Williams Circle Wednesdays from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and every second Saturday of the month at 11 a.m.-2 p.m. All are welcome and urged to become member and volunteer. Tri-City Elks

Country Line Dancing with Tami Mondays from 7-8:30 p.m. Cost is $6. There will be no class May 26, Memorial Day. Come and have some fun.

Preschool Registration

The Title I Office for Warwick Public Schools announced that Preschool registration for the 2014/2015 school year has started. The preschool program is fully funded through Title I. The program will run four half days each week with a parent component every other Friday. They are offering a morning or an afternoon session to families. Parents are required to attend every other Friday for informative workshops to support family learning and kindergarten readiness. This program is free of charge and is offered to families living in the Oakland Beach, Hoxsie, Wickes and Norwood areas. If you are or know of a family with a child who will be 4 years old by September 1 and are interested in this program, call Carol Maloney at 734-3426 or email at Maloneyc@warwickschools.org.

Hi-Lo-Jack League

A new session of Hi-Lo-Jack is starting on May 13. Everyone wishing to play arrive before 12:30 p.m. at the Pilgrim Senior Center or call Ray Walsh at 497-8097. Two dollars weekly with 10 cents up, 18-week league, all money collected goes back to players and all players get a lunch at the banquet.

Conimicut Village

Association Meets

The Conimicut Village Association will meet on Tuesday, May 13 at 7 p.m. in the lower level of Woodbury Union Church. Join your neighbors for an hour-long informational meeting to include reports by the Community Police and Association Committees. Everyone is welcome to attend. Refreshments will be served.

Also, the Conimicut Village Association is still accepting orders for memorial bricks.  Bricks can be used to commemorate a life event or to honor a person, living or deceased. The engraved bricks are installed along the walkway at the scenic overlook at the ocean end of Beach Avenue. Cruise Nights

Starting this Tuesday, May 13, and every Tuesday until September, the Greater Warwick Lions will be holding Cruising with the Oldies at Oakland Beach in Warwick from 4 p.m. to dusk. Sweet antique cars, DJ Dom playing the oldies, food vendors, raffles and prizes all with an ocean view. All proceeds benefit the Lions’ charities, Ronald McDonald House, children with cancer, Insight, children and adults in the community in need of glasses, scholarships awarded to Warwick students and JONAH. Cruise Night is weather permitting; check the Warwick Lions Cruise Night website for cancellations.

Gorton Luncheon

The Gorton High School monthly luncheon will be held May 14 at Timmy’s Waterfront Restaurant, One Bay Avenue, Oakland Beach, at 11:30 a.m. Cost is $15. All Gorton High School classmates from 1941-1955 are welcome. Norwood General Meeting

A general meeting will be held May 15 at 7 p.m. at the Norwood Boys & Girls Club, 43 Frederick St. The agenda will include a community police report followed by a presentation by Master Gardener Barbara Morgan, who will present an interesting presentation on all facets of planting to harvesting and answer any questions related to your gardening questions. There will also be a flower and plant swap at the end of the meeting.  For more details, email norwoodna@verizon.net. All are welcome.

Animal Shelter

The monthly meeting for Friends of the Warwick Animal Shelter will be held May 15 at The Pilgrim Senior Center, 27 Pilgrim Parkway (behind Benny’s on Warwick Avenue and near Pilgrim High School) at 6:30 p.m. They will be discussing the Cause for Paws car show to be held on June 8 and wrap-up for the craft fair to be held on May 10. Plant Sale

On Saturday, May 17 from 9 a.m. until 12 noon, the fifth annual plant sale sponsored by the Chatham Village Garden Club in Warwick will be held at the Buttonwoods Senior Center at 3027 West Shore Rd., Warwick. There will be a large selection of perennials, annuals, vegetables, bushes and some trees, and this year they will have a bake sale.

Community Tag Sale

The Conimicut Village Association will host its annual Spring Village-Wide Yard Sale May 17 from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. All Conimicut residents/businesses are welcome to participate at no cost by calling 524-8404 or by emailing ginbarham1@aol.com with the address where you will set up. CVA will advertise statewide. Maps showing all participating homes will be available for download at www.conimicut.org and on Craigslist after May 14 and at many participating homes the day of the event. There is no cost to participate.

Voices of RI Meeting

The Chatham Village Garden Club holds their annual plant and bake sale May 17 at the Buttonwoods Community Center from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Silver Tea Party

A Silver Tea Party will be held May 18 from 3-4:30 p.m. at St. Mark’s Church, 111 West Shore Rd., Call 737-3127. Gaspee Seniors

Scramble For SIDS

The Narragansett Spring Scramble For SIDS will take place May 23 with an 8 a.m. start at North Kingstown Public Golf Course. Soft spikes only; $125 per player included continental breakfast at 7:30 a.m., group & individual prizes, awards ceremony, raffles, longest drive, closest to the pin, putting contest, cart, streak fry with a special presentation to honor Eagle. Mixed groups welcome. Raffle with a chance to win a golf vacation in Catskills worth $500.

Divorce Group

The divorce group is a friendly, caring group of people who will walk alongside you through one of life’s most difficult experiences. Grief Support Group

Those who are suffering from the loss of a loved one are welcome to come to one or all of the grief support sessions that will be held at the Christ Church Office Condo (61 Cedar Ave., Unit 6, East Greenwich) every Sunday from 2-4 p.m. through June 1. The meetings will begin with a video featuring interviews with leading authors, counselors, speakers and pastors covering a variety of topics to help you deal with your grief, followed by discussion and sharing. Summer Internships

for College Students

College students are still being interviewed for summer internships, and Warwick Museum of Art is especially interested in education majors who enjoy working with children for its Summer Art Camp, and communications majors who want real-world experience writing articles, press releases and Facebook posts. These are unpaid internships, but WMOA is participating in a state-run program that provides small stipends for students who attend out-of-state colleges. New Gallery Hours at WMOA

The main gallery at Warwick Museum of Art, 3259 Post Road, Warwick, is now open Tuesdays through Fridays 10 a.m.-5 p.m. so exhibits are available to school groups, home-school students and anyone who can stop by on their lunch hour. The main gallery is also open on Saturdays from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. for those who work during the week. Aphasia Conversation Group

On the second Tuesday of each month from 6-7:30 p.m., Sargent Rehabilitation Center, 800 Quaker Lane, Warwick, holds an aphasia conversation group. This group provides a supportive meeting place for people with aphasia to socialize and share their communication challenges and strategies. There is no charge for participation. Fife & Drum Corps

Join the Pawtuxet Rangers Fife & Drum Corps of Warwick and continue the great tradition of Colonial/Revolutionary history through music. The Fife & Drum Corps meets every Wednesday night at Wyman Elementary School from 6:30-8 p.m. The corps is open to anyone over the age of 12. Drum and fife instruction is available to beginners.

The Village Singers

The Village Singers, an adult vocal ensemble, is seeking new members for all voice parts: soprano, alto, tenor and baritone Rehearsals will be on Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m. at the Scandinavian Home, Broad St., Cranston.
