Conimicut Village Association

The Conimicut Village Association meets Tuesday, Sept. 9 at 7 pm in the upper level of Woodbury Union Church.  Use the Carlisle Street entrance and go up one flight.  Join your neighbors and listen to the latest reports from the Community Police, hear the Craft Fair wrap-up and discuss holiday plans.  All are welcome.

GFWC Warwick Women’s Club

The GFWC Warwick Women’s Club will hold its first monthly meeting for the new club year Sept. 9 at 6:30 p.m. at the Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center in Warwick. Refreshments will be available. If you wish to attend this meeting, call Sandy at 595-4555 or email Warwick@gfwcri.org.

Greenwich Bay Women’s Club

The Greenwich Bay Women’s Club will have their first meeting of the 2014-15 year Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. at Atria Harborhill’s Community Room, 159 Division St., Warwick (on the East Greenwich/Warwick line). The first meeting of the club year is the always popular pot luck supper. It’s an evening of food and fun where new members or prospective members learn about the work they do, current members become reacquainted and everyone has a great time. The club is in its 50th year of community service. If you like people and would like to make a difference in local communities, check them out at any meeting. There are no age or residency requirements for membership; yearly dues are $35. They meet on the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. for socializing, with the business meeting commencing at 7:30 p.m.

Norwood General Meeting

Last year, one of the members of the Norwood Neighborhood Association observed a break-in in progress. He called the police, and the person was arrested. The homeowners were spared the grief of a break-in. To continue this level of vigilance, the Norwood Neighborhood Association will host a crime watch meeting Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. at the Norwood Boys & Girls Club, 43 Frederick St., presented by the community police. Learn how to become a crime preventer and not a victim. All are welcome and refreshments will be served.

Tri-City Elks

Country Western dance lessons will resume on Sept. 15 from 7-8 p.m. Cost is $6 per lesson. Classes are being offered by Tami. Proceeds to benefit Elks Charities.

Warwick Figure Skaters Registration

Warwick Figure Skaters will hold an open registration Sept. 13 from 12-2p.m. at Thayer Arena, 975 Sandy Lane, Warwick. Their learn-to-skate group lesson programs taught by professional instructors will begin Sept. 14 for 20 weeks. Club information is available on their website, www.warwickfs.org.

Dirty Paws for

a Good Cause

Metropet Dog Center will hold its first “Dirty Paws for a Good Cause” dog wash Sept. 13 at the Metropet Dog Center, 2057 West Shore Road, Warwick, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Dog wash and towel dry is $10 per dog or $8 per dog if you bring your own towel. Event goes on rain or shine; the dirtier the dog, the better. Volunteers are ready to scrub the dogs’ paws clean, then towel dry for a good cause. There will be lots of water flying and ears flapping. Also, Susan Parker from Dynamic Dog Training will offer free dog training tips. Browse animal-related vendors and take a chance on great raffle prizes. All proceeds will benefit the homeless cats and dogs waiting for adoption at the Warwick Animal Shelter. Girl Scouts

Registration

Girl Scout registrations will be held for all girls residing in Warwick Sept. 13 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Warwick Public Library on Sandy Lane, and Sept. 16 from 6-8 p.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 610 Jefferson Blvd. Girls in kindergarten through grade 12 may join Girl Scouts.

During the registration event families will have the opportunity to speak with current leaders and scouts about the various programs offered through Girl Scouting. London Bridge Fundraiser

Tour de Trudeau Bike Run

Trudeau Center’s home-based Children’s Services Department is holding the second annual Tour de Trudeau Bike Run on Sept. 14 at 8 a.m. at City Park in Warwick. There is a 22-, 10- or 3-mile course. St. Benedict Circle #423 Daughters of Isabella is holding their annual Fall Cash Bingo fundraiser on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 12:30 p.m. in St. Benedict Parish Hall, on Transit St., Warwick. St. Paul Yard Sale

St. Paul Parish on Broad Street in Cranston is hosting a yard sale on Saturday, Sept. 20, with a rain date of Saturday, Sept. 27. Vendors are needed. Magic of Music Fundraiser

St. Benedict’s Church 100th

Anniversary Gala

On Sept. 27 St. Benedict Church, 135 Beach Avenue, will be having their 100th anniversary gala. It will begin with 4 p.m. Mass and be followed by a spectacular celebration in the newly refurbished and handicapped accessible Parish Center. The church is looking for former priests, deacons, principals, nuns, teachers, students, choir members and former and present parishioners. Crafters Needed

Crafters needed for the annual Heritage Day event at the Paine House Museum located at 7 Station St., Coventry, on September 27. The price per table is $25. Women of Achievement Awards

Join YWCA Rhode Island at the 10th Annual Women of Achievement Awards Sept. 30 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Kirkbrae Country Club, Lincoln. Car Wash

Saint Kevin’s School’s 8th grade class will be holding a fundraising car wash Oct. 4 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Knights of cClumbus parking lot located at 475 Sandy Lane. Proceeds from this event will go to helping the class defray the cost of their end of year trip. Cars will be $5 and large trucks and vans will be $7. Moms RI

Support a new mother, share your experience and make a new friend. You can make a difference with just on hour a week. Moms for Moms RI helps pregnant women and new mothers deal with an enormous transition by matching them with trained volunteers who are mothers themselves. The program provides emotional and social support and strives to connect new moms to resources within their own communities. Mentors develop a warm, supportive relationship while spending time with the new mom in their homes, accompanying them on outings, and attending mom gatherings. Aphasia Conversation Group

On the second Tuesday of each month from 6-7:30 p.m., Sargent Rehabilitation Center, 800 Quaker Lane, Warwick, holds an aphasia conversation group. Evening Counseling Available

Help for Victims of Crime

Are you a victim of physical or sexual assault, domestic violence, untreated childhood abuse, or another crime or traumatic event? Volunteers Needed to Sew

Looking for something to do to help foster kids? Organizers of The Sewing Project to Help Foster Kids are looking for volunteers who want to help sew pillowcase or duffel bags for foster children. Currently their belongings are sometimes put in black trash bags. Foster parent Adriane Grimaldi in Scottsdale, Ariz. started the Sewing Project in February 2008 for children taken from their homes by Child Protective Services (CPS) to make kid-friendly bags for carrying their belongings instead of trash bags. To date, people have made 6,700 pillowcase bags for foster kids Pillowcase bags are delivered to CPS to use instead of trash bags. The Sewing Project has opened a new Rhode Island Chapter working with the Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) and is in need of volunteers to sew. Cornerstone Church

Domestic Abuse Support Groups

The Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center is a non-profit agency providing services to victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault. The agency offers morning and evening support groups for adults dealing with current or past domestic abuse Groups provide a safe place to talk with others who have shared similar experiences. Free Health Care

Our Lady of Fatima Hospital has an outreach coordinator to assist women in getting free health care If you are between the ages of 40-64 and are underserved or uninsured, call Maria at 456-3105 for a confidential assessment. You may be eligible for free care including mammogram and gynecological care.

Old Warwick Grange #41

The Grange is a fraternal community service, non-profit organization with a special interest in rural life and the traditions of faith, patriotism, leadership and family values Grange where the whole family can go and grow Help them to help others The meetings are held on the third Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. No meetings in July or August. The Grange hall is located at 1175 West Shore Rd.

Developmental Screening

The Child Outreach Department of the Warwick Public Schools, in cooperation with the Volunteers of Warwick schools (VOWS), conducts regular preschool screening clinics. All Warwick preschool children between the ages of 3 and 5 are offered the Early Screening Inventory-Revised (ESI-R). This is a free service provided by the Warwick Public Schools. Participation in a Developmental Screening is a long established program of the Warwick School Department that provides families with information about their child’s development and offers information about community resources.
