(Intense religious mystery)

Whew!

If you like intensity, mystery, and thought-provoking moments, “Calvary” is the movie to see.

Brendan Gleeson, that wonderful Irish actor, stars as a priest in a small Irish village who, in the opening scene, is faced with a death threat delivered by an unknown person in a confessional box.

Father James goes about his parish visits to a variety of believers and non-believers, each one a possible suspect. The visits are sometimes humorous and sometimes tense, and always interesting.

Father James became a priest after his wife died. He is visited by his daughter, Fiona (Kelly Reilly), who feels that her father has abandoned her and has attempted suicide.

The story is filled with fascinating characters, raising a multitude of moral issues, building suspense at every turn, and culminating in a surprise ending that will leave you sitting there, staring at the credits while trying to absorb all that has happened.

Father James challenges and chastises many of his flock, including his assistant, who just doesn’t get it. He is judgmental, sarcastic and often funny as he provokes and prods people to question their own faith.

If you like movies that also challenge your beliefs while at the same time entertaining you with a great story, don’t miss “Calvary.”

Rated R, with profanity and violence.
