The CCRI women’s soccer team traveled to Brockton, Massachusetts, to play the Warriors of Massasoit Community College for a Region XXI non-league match on Wednesday. The Lady Knights defeated the Warriors, 4-0. With the victory, the Lady Knights improve to 6-4 overall and 3-1 in Region XXI play.

This was the second meeting between the Lady Knights and Warriors this year.

On Sept. 20, the Lady Knights defeated the Warriors, 7-0, at CCRI in Lincoln.

This game would be a much different contest on the home turf of Massasoit. However, the Lady Knights did get on the scoreboard quickly, scoring close to six minutes in, as Lady Knights’ co-captain Kaitlin Murrin (Norton, Mass.) crossed the ball into CCRI leading scorer Mercedes Faust (Warwick, R.I.), who headed the ball into the net past Warriors’ goalkeeper Kelly Cronin, making the score 1-0.

From there, the Lady Knights’ offense took many shots, but could not convert them into goals.

Both teams went into the halftime break with the score, 1-0, in favor of CCRI.

The game remained 1-0 for the first 20 minutes of the second half, but then the Lady Knights began to find the back of the net. First, Murrin once again found Faust for another cross that she headed into the goal to make the score 2-0.

Eight minutes later, Riley McKitchen (Coventry, R.I.) scored a goal from outside the 18-yard box, with the assist going to Murrin, giving her three assists on the day. Two minutes later, the Lady Knights tallied their final goal when Murrin scored on an assist from Faithe Fernandez (North Providence, R.I.), giving CCRI the 4-0 advantage, and that is how the game would end.

With five games left in the season, the Lady Knights are doing very well with a 6-4 overall record and have a couple players ranked in the top 50 in the NJCAA national statistics.

Faust is tied for No. 18 in the nation with 14 goals. Also, sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Van Bemmelen

(North Providence, R.I.) is ranked No. 10 in the nation with 93 saves on the year in 10 games and 906 minutes 48 seconds in net.

The Lady Knights played a pair of games in New Jersey over the weekend. CCRI dropped its Saturday meeting with Mercer County Community College, 6-1, with Faust scoring the team’s lone goal.

A result from Sunday’s game against Essex Community College was unavailable at press time.
