Lady Knights drop Bayhawks, 69-66

The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team traveled to Bristol Community College (BCC) in Fall River, Massachusetts, to play the Bayhawks for a Region XXI non-league game. The Lady Knights beat the Bayhawks, 69-66. With the victory, CCRI improves to 6-5 overall and 3-1 in Region XXI play.

The Lady Knights bolted out of the gates with an excellent first quarter, outscoring the Bayhawks, 24-12, with balanced scoring. CCRI got six points from co-captain Mackenzie Brayman (North Stonington, Connecticut) and five points apiece from Dionna Jackson (Harriston, Mississippi) and D’Asia Allen (Providence, Rhode Island). In the second quarter, the teams played evenly with CCRI narrowly outscoring BCC, 19-18, with Jackson and Allen leading the way again. Jackson scored six points and Allen added five points to give the Lady Knights a 43-30 lead going into halftime.

Once again in the third quarter both teams played evenly, scoring 21 points apiece. In this quarter, the Lady Knights got huge contributions from Ashley VanBemmelen (North Providence, Rhode Island), who scored 10 points including two 3-pointers, and Tiondra Hands (Delray Beach, Florida) scored all nine of her points in the third as well to keep the CCRI lead at 13 points going in to the final quarter. 

In the fourth quarter, the Lady Knights did not play well at all, scoring only five points while Bristol stormed back, outscoring CCRI, 15-5, in the final 10 minutes. Fortunately for the Lady Knights, they held on to win by the final count of 69-66.  

Leading the way for the Lady Knights was VanBemmelen, scoring a team-high 15 points with two 3-pointers, seven rebounds, four steals and three assists, followed by Jackson, who scored 14 points with nine rebounds, three steals and an assist. Also playing well was Allen, who just missed a double-double, scoring 10 points with nine rebounds, three assists and two steals. Hands had nine points with a team-high seven assists and two steals. The CCRI co-captains also helped with Kelsey Hernandez (New Britain, Connecticut) scoring eight points with four assists and four rebounds, while Brayman added seven points, six rebounds and two assists.

The next game for the Lady Knights will be Thursday when they travel to Worcester, Massachusetts, to play the Wyverns of Quinsigamond Community College at 5 p.m. The CCRI men’s basketball team will follow with a game against the Wyverns at 7 p.m.
