The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team hosted the Bayhawks of Bristol Community College from Fall River, Massachusetts, for a game Thursday evening. The Lady Knights defeated the Bayhawks, 61-45. With the victory, CCRI improves to 9-10 on the season.

The CCRI Lady Knights were coming off two straight losses and were looking to right the ship as they took on Region XXI foe Bristol Community College. CCRI did just that with great help from freshman shooting guard D’Asia Allen (Providence, Rhode Island), who put forth her best game in a CCRI uniform. The Lady Knights jumped out to a quick 15-8 lead after one quarter behind the sharpshooting of Allen,

who sank three of her career-high six 3-pointers in the first quarter. Allen was helped by Tiondra Hands (Delray Beach, Florida), who scored the Lady Knights’ other six points. In the second quarter, CCRI cruised out to a 23-12 lead with four minutes left in the quarter before its offense totally stalled. Bristol then responded with 10 unanswered points on two 3-pointers from Katia Luna and two baskets from center Shannon Rosensteel to make the score 23-23 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Allen made her presence felt again by draining two more 3-pointers for six points, while Hands also added a 3-pointer and a basket to give her five points in the quarter, as the two players combined to score 11 of the 17 points for CCRI. With the Lady Knights leading, 40-34, going into the final quarter, CCRI needed to finish strong to close out the game. The Lady Knights did just that, scoring 21 points in the final quarter – their highest quarter output of the contest.

CCRI got two 3-pointers from tri-captain Mackenzie Brayman (North Stonington, Connecticut), one from Allen and another from tri-captain Kelsey Hernandez (New Britain, Connecticut) in the final quarter.

Leading the way for the Lady Knights was Allen with 21 points, six 3-pointers, six steals and nine rebounds – all career-highs. Also having a big game was Hands, scoring 12 points with eight assists, eight rebounds and two steals. Rounding out the top performers for CCRI was Brayman with 11 points, including two 3-pointers and nine rebounds, while Hernandez added nine points, 12 rebounds and three assists.

The next games for the Lady Knights will come as part of the CCRI Invitational this weekend when they host Genesee Community College at 5 p.m. Saturday and Mercer County Community College at 4 p.m. Sunday.
