CCRI Roundup: Men's soccer wins a pair, loses to Suffolk

Posted

The CCRI Men’s Soccer team got down early and never recovered in an 11-0 loss to Suffolk County Community College Saturday afternoon at the Flanagan Campus in Lincoln. With the loss, the Knights fell to 2-5-1 on the season and remained 2-1-1 in Region XXI play.

Prior to that game, CCRI had won two in a row, including a 2-0 win over Springfield Tech on Thursday.

Against Suffolk, the Knights came out flat, making uncharacteristic mistakes on defense. It didn’t take long for Suffolk to capitalize on these mistakes, racing out to a 5-0 lead at halftime, and deflating whatever hope CCRI had left.

It didn’t get much better for the Knights in the second half, as Suffolk’s substitutions came off of the bench hungry for playing time. Those players added six second-half goals to make it an 11-0 final score.

“Our players cannot come out for a game and not be ready to go mentally right from the sound of the whistle,” said CCRI head coach Gabe Toro. “We have talent on the team, but we still have to put in the hard work and commit to the cause. We’re not good enough to come out flat, go through the motions, and then try to come back from five goals down.”

Against Springfield Tech, the score was 0-0 at halftime despite CCRI having several opportunities in the first half, including a hit crossbar by Trevor Lopes (Cumberland) and a number of quality chances for Evan Gaudreau (Jamestown).

In the second half, however, the Knights were able to capitalize on their chances. After Sindio Freitas (Cape Verde) and Brandon Silvestri (Warwick) put together a series of nice passes, Freitas crossed the ball and Nathan Dacosta (Warwick) volleyed the ball past the keeper, giving CCRI a 1-0 lead. Junior Robert (Providence, RI) scored his third goal in his last two games later in the half, pressuring a defender and finishing off an outstanding individual effort to give the Knights a 2-0 lead.

Toro said that Logan Corcoran (Greenville), Jackson Acciaoli (Greenville), Brandon Iannelli (North Kingstown), and Adam Coutu (Moosup, Conn.) all played well defensively.

Lady Knights’ volleyball splits day two of NY Classic!

The CCRI Lady Knights’ volleyball team continued play in the New York Classic on Sunday at Monroe College in New Rochelle, where it went 1-1 in its two matches. It defeated Delaware Technical Community College 3-0 and lost to Potomac State Community College 3-0.

CCRI fell to 5-13 on the season.

Game one

Co-Captain Delyn Pizzaro (Homestead, Fla.) finished the game with four kills and four blocks. Freshman Victoria Parente (Johnston) finished with two aces one dig while Sarah Keomorokot (Pawtucket) had seven kills and eight digs. Ormarie Colon (Providence) had five kills, nine digs, four aces and one block. Rounding out the CCRI attack was Emily Taylor (South Kingstown), who had six aces, 19 assists, five digs and a block, and Hannah Derefaka (West Warwick) had four blocks and two kills.

Game two

Pizzaro finished the game with four kills and three blocks and was helped by Keomorokot, who had 12 digs. Colon had 11 digs, Taylor contributed two aces, 17 assists and 14 digs and Kayleigh Clauson (Wakefield) finished with 11 digs.

“This was another frustrating match,” said CCRI head coach Samantha Amaral. “I felt as a coach we could have taken this match. Our Lady Knights made too many errors on the net and passing. We had some shining moments but unfortunately it was too late in the game to turn it around for a win.”

The next matches for the Lady Knights will be next weekend when they travel to Hagerstown, Md. to take on some strong Division II programs at the Hagerstown Invite.

Anderson leads Knights at Codfish Bowl Invite

The CCRI Cross Country team put together a solid showing Saturday morning at the Codfish Bowl Invite, held at Franklin Park in Boston. Ian Anderson (Warwick) led the Knights for the second straight race, finishing in 79th place with a time of 32 minutes 41 seconds.

Much like the UMass Dartmouth Invitational, Jared Gruslin (North Smithfield) finished immediately after Anderson, finishing in 80th with a time of 32:41 as well. Joe Gareri (Uxbridge, Mass.) was the Knights third runner in the race, placing 94th in a time of 34:15.

All three of CCRI’s runners finished with close to the same times as the previous week. This was impressive, considering the hot and humid conditions and a difficult course that featured little shade.

The Knights will be back in action this Saturday, when they host the CCRI Tri-State Open, held at the Flanagan Campus in Lincoln. The men’s race will get underway at 11 a.m., while the women’s race is scheduled for 12 p.m.

Lady Knights Squeeze by Holyoke CC

The CCRI Lady Knights women’s soccer team hosted the Cougars of Holyoke Community College form Holyoke, Mass. Wednesday and came away with a 1-0 victory. With the win, CCRI improved to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in Region XXI play.

The Lady Knights pressured Holyoke early on into the match.  In the 13th minute, sophomore midfielder Carla Porras threaded a nice pass to sophomore forward Ashley LeClair (Westerly) who put up a lofting shot over the head of the Holyoke keeper into the goal, giving CCRI a 1-0 advantage. The Lady Knights created many more scoring opportunities throughout the rest of the half but couldn’t convert.

The second half was hard fought by both teams. With only a 1-0 lead to protect, the CCRI defensive corps of Ricki Beaufort (Warwick), captain Lauren Cattani (Cranston), Meghan Rousseau (Richmond), Selena Canales (Cranston) and goalkeeper Jennifer Kilburn (Norton, Mass.) thwarted any chances that Holyoke could muster and held on for the win.

“Every time we play Holyoke it becomes some kind of an ‘adventure’ for us,” said CCRI head coach Dennis Grassini. “For some reason they are always up for our games. They are a very well coached team and we always seem to have trouble scoring against them for some reason.  We are just not making the most of our opportunities so far this season. Hopefully we will snap out of this trend that we seem to be in soon.”
