DOING THEIR PART: Members of the CCRI women’s basketball team pose for photos with the St. Margaret girls’ basketball team.

The CCRI basketball teams are both in the midst of grueling seasons but they’ve taken time out of their busy schedules in recent weeks to give back to the community. On Jan. 16, the women’s basketball team shared its knowledge with the St. Margaret Catholic Athletic League team.

Then, on Jan. 23, the men’s and women’s teams hosted the seventh annual CCRI Basketball Special Olympics Day at the Vincent A. Cullen Field House.

The trip to St. Margaret in Rumford was a homecoming for head coach Kate Lynch, who played for the team 12 years ago. The Lady Knights had just come off an overtime victory over defending national champion Monroe College but made time for the youngsters at St. Margaret.

“It is easy to rest on your laurels and just be happy with a good season that we are having,” Lynch said. “However, when the opportunity arose to be able to come back here to St. Margaret with the team we leaped at the chance. I also knew that our young ladies like to share their experiences and give back, which as a coach makes me proud.”

For Special Olympics Day, which CCRI has been holding since 2007, the Knights and Lady Knights welcomed four Special Olympics teams to the court for a pair of games. The day culminated in a medal ceremony for the athletes during halftime of the men’s basketball game.
