The CCRI indoor track team traveled to the Reggie Lewis Center in Roxbury Crossings, Mass., to compete in the Roxbury All-Comers Invitational on Saturday. There were no team results, but many notable individual performances to start out the second semester.

Leading the way for the Knights was sophomore Lee Mandanici (Medina, Ohio), who finished third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 53.52 seconds. Mandanici came back to finish 40th in the 200-meter dash in a time of 26.99 seconds. Also running well was sophomore sprinter Connor Williamson (West Warwick, R.I.), finishing the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 9.37 seconds. Also running well were the three Knights in the 800-meter run led by Kody Sankey (Cumberland, R.I.), who finished fifth in two minutes, 6.98 seconds, followed by Jared Gruslin (North Smithfield, R.I.), who finished 23rd in 2:17.98 and Ian Fletcher (Lincoln, R.I.), who finished 33rd in 2:36.95.  Rounding out the Knights’ efforts was the 4x400-meter team of Fletcher, Mandanici, Gruslin and Sankey, which finished eighth in a time of 3:56.73.

On the women’s side, CCRI only had one participant, Nina Perez (Providence, R.I.), who finished fifth in the 400-meter dash in a time of one minute, 18.13 seconds. Perez then came back to finish 21st in the 200-meter dash in a time of 34.07 seconds.

The next meet for CCRI will be Saturday, Jan. 23, when it travels to Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn., for a meet beginning at 10 a.m.

Lady Knights fall to Genesee

The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team completed its play in the 2016 CCRI Basketball Invitational on Sunday by playing the Cougars of Genesee Community College from Batavia, N.Y.  The Lady Knights lost to the Cougars, 68-57. With the loss, the Lady Knights fall to 10-11 on the season.

The Lady Knights looked to be in for what could have been an easier game after beating Genesee 76-50 at the Genesee Cougar Holiday Classic in Batavia in December. However, the Cougars had other plans and came out playing with tremendous enthusiasm and determination while the Lady Knights seemed flat and never got out of first gear.

The Lady Knights did jump out to a 10-4 lead, but the Cougars were able to close the gap to just three points by the end of the first quarter, 15-12. In the second quarter, Genesee kicked it into another gear and outscored the Lady Knights 17-13. The Cougars were paced by forward Karly Fanning, who led all scorers with 15 first half points to give Genesee the 29-28 halftime lead.

In the third quarter, both teams battled back and forth with no team gaining a clear advantage, but Genesee still held a two-point lead with the score 47-45 going into the final quarter.  Unfortunately for the Lady Knights, Genesee closed out the game with its best quarter, getting six points from Fanning and nine from Brionna Blocker to pull away from CCRI and win by the final count of 68-57.

Leading the way for CCRI was Kennethah Harden (Roosevelt, N.Y.) who charted her 16th double-double, scoring 18 points while ripping down 17 rebounds. Harden is putting together a tremendous season statistically and is ranked in the top 50 in multiple categories: ranked second in made field goals with 161, 18th in field goal percentage at 56.3 percent, first in offensive rebounds with 104, second in defensive rebounds with 156, second in total rebounds with 260, ninth in rebounds per game with 12.4 and 35th in points per game with 17.7 points.

Also helping CCRI versus Genesee was Ashley Correa (Providence, R.I.) with 10 points and three steals, co-captain Lyric Artis (Albany, N.Y.) with nine points and four assists and co-captain Haley Beausoleil (Plainfield, Conn.) with eight points and five rebounds.
