The Cranston National Budlong 10-year-old all-stars snuck by Warwick North 6-5 Sunday night in a thriller at “the Pit.” Warwick starting pitcher Julia Krause was phenomenal, despite the loss, throwing nine strikeouts in the game.

Cranston took the field first as the away team and Taylor Simoneau pitched from the circle. Simoneau was very productive as well, earning three strikeouts while yielding five runs in five innings of work.

“We’re a tough team to beat, I know that,” Cranston manager Dan Cote said. “A lot of what we do is really based on our defense and our pitching. We have great pitchers, we have great defense and they came out tonight against a tough team and we put it together.”

Krause stepped into the circle for Warwick and she went straight to work, striking out Alessandra Messina. Next, Simoneau hit a shot down the third base line and she ended up making it all the way to third on the play because of an error on the throw to first. Next, Sofia Marella lifted one to center for an RBI double that scored Simoneau, putting Cranston on top 1-0. Then, Samantha Healy hit a line drive double that scored Marella, giving Cranston a 2-0 edge. Healy wound up taking third on a passed ball before Krause struck out Ave Santo for the second out. Gabrielle Valetta batted next and hit a fly to right for a double, scoring Healy and putting Cranston up 3-0. Krause prevented further damage when she got Lindsey Signore to ground out to strand the runners.

In the top of the second, Simoneau got Alayna Medina to line out to Signore, the second baseman. Next, Krause got on via an infield hit. Warwick elected to bring in Lily Marchessault to pinch-run for Krause. Next, Rachael Sayler grounded out while moving the runner to third. With one out, Kiara Scanlon got on because of an error at first and scored Marchessault to get Warwick on the board at 3-1. Olivia Bordeleau attempted a bunt next, but was easily thrown out at first for the final out.

Krause struck out Gianna Degaitas, Messina and Simoneau in order in the bottom of the second inning.

Marella led off the bottom of the third with a single. Next, Healy hit into a fielder’s choice force out at second and shortly after stole second. Then, Santo hit a bomb to center to score Healy. However, Santo got greedy on the play and was thrown out sliding into third. With the run, Cranston led 4-1. With two down Valetta hit a single to right center before Jeffrey got an infield hit. With runners at first and second, Krause came up with a big strikeout on Signore.

In the top of the fourth, Simoneau got Genna D’Amato to pop up to Signore. Next, Medina hit a shot to center that landed for a single. Krause then hit a grounder for a double that scored Medina, pulling Warwick to 4-2. Next, Sayler hit an RBI double to score Krause, making it 4-3. Sayler would take third on a passed ball before Sophia Stogner hit a fielder’s choice, RBI that scored Sayler, tying the game at 4.

Krause struck out Degaitas to start the bottom of the fourth for Warwick. Next, Messina hit a rocket to right for a single before stealing second. Next, Krause struck out Simoneau. Krause induced a pop up from Marrella next, but the third baseman misplayed it, which led to runners at the corners. Marrella stole second with Healy at the plate. Healy hit an infield fly that caused a miscommunication between the Warwick shortstop and second baseman and landed. During the miscue, Cranston scored a run and went up 5-4. Finally, Alexandra Maloney grounded out to the shortstop Medina, who stepped on second for the force out to end the frame.

Jessica Sheridan walked to lead off the fifth and would wind up stealing second. Motto then grounded out while moving Sheridan to third. Emma Burr bunted next to score Sheridan. Burr would end up at second base before getting tagged out trying to take third. D’Amato would ground out for the final out.

In the bottom of the fifth, Cranston’s Valetta grounded out to the pitcher. Next, Jeffrey got an infield hit and stole second. Krause then struck out Signore for the second out before Paige Cote knocked in Jeffrey with a hit to right to give Cranston a 6-5 lead.

Cranston brought out Cote to close out the game in the top of the sixth. Medina led off for Warwick and Cote struck her out swinging. Next, Krause hit a line drive single to put the tying run on base. On a passed ball, Krause took second. Sayler would walk next. With two on, Cote earned a big strikeout on Kiara Scanlon. With Warwick down to its final out, Cote got McDonnell to ground out to seal the deal.

Burr, the Warwick third baseman was happy despite the loss.

“It was great,” Burr said. “Everybody did their best. The little things are just what happens and it costs us runs. We are always better every day.”

Kevin Burr, the Warwick manager, was also upbeat despite the loss.

“These girls have worked hard for a long time,” Burr said. “We put in the work, so seeing them do what they did tonight wasn’t a surprise. We came up a little short. We didn’t bring our ‘A’ game, but we hung in there.”

Cranston moves on to play in the championship on Wednesday against the winner of Warwick North and Cumberland, which face off tonight in the losers’ bracket. Cumberland knocked out Middletown 10-2 earlier in the day.

“We’ll try to make quick work of them and get back to these guys,” Burr said.
