Cranston National Budlong pounced on Warwick North 13-3 Monday night at Elmwood Little League behind a complete game from Sophia DiPippo. Not only did DiPippo dazzle in the circle with seven strikeouts, she also knocked in the game-winning runs.

“She is in a zone right now,” Cranston manager PJ Bessette said. “She’s just focused on doing what’s right. She takes her pitching lessons. Just let her go, we’ll ride that train all day long. She’s phenomenal.”

DiPippo got right to work, getting Madison D’Amato to line out on the first pitch of the game. After DiPippo struck out Destinee Santiago, Emily Tow reached first base on an infield popup when Cranston’s defense misplayed it and it fell for a single. With Bryanna Rastella at the plate, Tow stole second. Tow would eventually come all the way home after there was a throwing error at third. Warwick led 1-0 after half of an inning.

Tow pitched for Warwick in the bottom of the first and the defense didn’t help her much. Sophia Ferry hit a deep fly to center field and Warwick center fielder Riley Chartier misplayed it, which resulted in Ferry standing at second. Next, Mackenzie Bessette ran out a ground ball and beat the throw to first while Ferry moved to third. With runners at the corners, Sydney Casale lined out to the second baseman for the first out. Delaney Doidge then blasted a double to shallow left, scoring both Ferry and Bessette and putting Cranston on top 2-1. After a wild pitch to Emily Durigan, Doidge stole third before Durigan eventually walked. With runners at the corners, Ava Brandow popped out to the shortstop for the second out. Durigan took second on a wild pitch before DiPippo hit a single, scoring Doidge, making it 3-1. Elizabeth Lewandowski then hit a line drive RBI single to score another run, putting Cranston up 4-1.

In the top of the second, Kelsey Burr reached safely at first after a miscue by the Cranston first baseman. With Chartier batting, pinch-runner Amelia Murphy, who was running for Burr, stole second. After a throwing error that went over the second baseman’s head, Murphy trotted all the way home to cut the Warwick deficit to 4-2. DiPippo prevented further damage when she got back-to-back strikeouts on Chartier and Lauren Fracassa.

Cranston’s Emily Iannuccilli and Lyndsey Brandow both grounded out to start the bottom of the second before Casale popped out to short for the last out.

In the top of the third, Bella Demelo grounded out for the first out. Next, D’Amato hit a single and she would steal second shortly after. With Santiago at the plate, D’Amato stole third. Santiago then laid down a perfect bunt. In an effort to score D’Amato from third, Santiago headed for second, but D’Amato never headed home and Santiago was thrown out at second. Warwick eventually cut it to 4-3 when Tow batted in D’Amato from third.

Cranston’s Doidge hit a single to right in the bottom of the third and Durigan followed it with a base hit to center. Avery Izzi struck out before DiPippo hit a single to load the bases. Lewandowski then blasted a double to center, scoring two runs, putting Cranston up 6-3.

In the top of the fourth, DiPippo got both Burr and Chartier to ground out before striking out Sydney Suffoletto.

In the bottom of the fourth, Cranston’s Mackenzie Bessette hit a bloop single that should have been caught. Next, Madison Saluato moved the runner to second while grounding out. With one down, Doidge hit a ground ball and beat out the throw to first. Next, Durigan hit a single, scoring Bessette, putting Cranston up 7-3. Next, Ava Brandow reached on a single while Doidge was gunned down at home plate. With two runners on, Tow walked DiPippo to load the bases. Lewandowski then hit a single to score Durigan, increasing Cranston’s edge to 8-3. With the bases reloaded, Emily Bessette tallied a hit, scoring another run to go up 9-3.

In the top of the fifth, DiPippo made quick work of Warwick. First, she struck out Murphy and Madelyn Narcavage before walking D’Amato. After a conference at the mound, DiPippo struck out pinch-hitter Jenna Alteri.

In the bottom of the fifth, Cranston scored four more runs to earn a victory by way of the 10-run rule. First, Ferry led off with a triple. Then, Mackenzie Bessette bunted and reached safely before swiping second uncontested. Next, Saluato grounded out at first while knocking in two runs, putting Cranston up 11-3. After Doidge flew out to center, Durigan crushed a triple to center. Next, Ava Brandow earned a walk. With runners at the corners, DiPippo ended the game when she crushed a double to center, scoring both runners and giving Cranston a 13-3 win.

It was a rough day for Warwick North to say the least.

“It’s just like any other given day, you don’t know who’s going to come out and whose not,” Warwick manager Brian D’Amato said. “And obviously they came out very strong tonight. They didn’t make mistakes like we did and it’s very uncommon for us to make a lot of mistakes. These girls worked hard all week long. But, I think we still have our best ball to come.”

Even Cranston’s manager PJ Bessette was shocked by the outcome.

“I didn’t expect that because that’s a good team over there,” Bessette said. “They’re well-coached, well-disciplined. . . I’m very proud of these girls. They had a game plan. They wanted to put the ball in play and make them make plays. It was fun to watch.”
