Camp BraveHeart offers kids help with loss

Children dealing with the loss of a loved one found solace at Camp BraveHeart, Home & Hospice Care of Rhode Island’s summer camp program designed to help kids cope with grief, held recently at Camp Fuller in Wakefield.

More than 95 children, ages 4 to 17, attended the free, two-day camp, now in its eighth year of operation.

Children enjoyed both traditional summer camp activities, such as kayaking, storytelling and theater, as well as opportunities to remember their loved ones through discussion, scrapbooking and remembrance circles.

“We are so thankful to the volunteers and donors who contributed to another successful year of Camp BraveHeart. The children who attend Camp BraveHeart are provided with a safe environment, led by caring, bereavement trained adults, where they can express their emotions while connecting with other kids who share a common bond with them. The camp is a place where they don’t have to feel alone in their grief,” said Deanna Upchurch, MA, grief and volunteer programs specialist at Home & Hospice Care.

Camp BraveHeart was made possible through donations from CVS Charity Classic, Inc., PBruins Fundraising Event, The Pilkington Memorial Golf Tournament and individual donors. Anyone wishing to donate to the Camp BraveHeart Fund may send a tax-deductible contribution to Home & Hospice Care of Rhode Island, Department of Philanthropy, 1085 North Main St., Providence, RI 02904.

Home & Hospice Care’s bereavement program guides people of all ages through the difficult times that follow the death of someone special. Support groups meet throughout the state at various times year-round. Groups are free and open to the public, even to those who are not using the organization’s hospice services.
