Candidates should take note of Lights on Afterschool rally

To the Editor:

In this crowded election year, a number of important issues haven't gotten much attention. One that's particularly important to me is after school programs.

I'm extremely fortunate to have my son, Xavier, participate in the Kidventure after school program offered at Gladstone Elementary because it enables him to become socially involved with other students as well as the faculty. Xavier not only does most of his homework during this period but also feels as if he is part of a team, which allows him to learn much more easily, whether it is in this environment or in the classroom atmosphere. Yes, Kidventure does what most other after school programs offer, but this particular program goes above & beyond in the sense that they offer a family-type environment and the kids love being there. But recent data from the Afterschool Alliance tell us that for every child who participates in an after school program, two more children would be enrolled if a program were available. Most often, it isn't. The problem is particularly acute in impoverished communities.

On October 20, Kidventure will celebrate the 17th annual Lights On Afterschool, a nationwide rally in support of after school programs. It's a chance for everyone to show their support for these vital programs that are keeping our children safe, inspiring them to learn, and helping working families – and to encourage an increase in local, state and federal support for these essential programs. Let's hope all the candidates are listening!

Sadly, in Warwick, unless their is a miracle, no teachers will do anything after the bell rings. Unless they are paid more money. It isn't for the kids. It isn't for the future. Its for the paycheck.

    Dear Justanidiot,

Respectfully, I disagree with you on this one. I believe that once the contract issue is resolved the teachers will feel "normal" again and they will find greater interest in after school activities.

I hope that is the case.

    Stay well my friend.
