Kowalik became the first gymnast in Vets history to capture the individual state title this past weekend. Her total score was the second-best in Rhode Island gymnastics history.

"I was kind of nervous coming in, but I did my best today, and that was good enough," Kowalik said. "It feels really good to come in as a freshman and take first place."
