’Canes back on a roll with third straight victory

Posted

Warwick Vets dropped below .500 on Jan. 31 and had a full week to think about it thanks to last week’s snowy weather.

Since getting back to action, though, the ’Canes have regrouped in a big way. They beat Mount St. Charles 75-55 on Friday and Davies 70-58 on Monday. Tuesday, Vets stretched its win streak to three with a 63-56 win over a Burrillville team that leads Division III-North.

The streak has been powered by solid team efforts and a break-out for senior standout Will Remak, who’s averaging 19 points per game in the surge. He hit six three-pointers and scored 24 against Mount St. Charles. On Tuesday, he hit four threes and tallied 20 points.

Ryan Wirth added 11 points and Scott Camara scored 10 in Friday’s win over Mount. Remak and Kyle Rice led the way with 13 each in Monday’s win over Davies.

Tuesday, the ’Canes led by one at halftime but pulled away in the second half for the win over Burrillville. Remak’s 20 led the charge. Kevin Martin had eight and Josh Muto had seven.

The ’Canes are now 7-5 in league play and sitting just behind first-place Juanita Sanchez (9-4) and second-place Pilgrim (8-4) in Division III-Central.

On Friday, Vets will host 4-7 North Smithfield at 7 p.m. Next Tuesday, cross-town rival Toll Gate comes to Vets for a 7 p.m. tip.

Skippers handle

Hawks again

On the heels of its best win of the season – a 61-49 triumph over Coventry – the Bishop Hendricken basketball team hosted another strong opponent, North Kingstown, on Tuesday night.

Another big win wasn’t in the cards.

The Skippers out-scored Hendricken by nine in the final eight minutes of the game to post a 53-47 victory. The teams now have matching 10-3 records that put them atop Division I-South.

Spencer Bode and Grant Gillis had 12 points each for the Skippers, who now own a pair of victories over Hendricken this season.

The Hawks got 15 points from Garfield Coustard and 13 from Matt Duffie.

Hendricken’s string of tough games continues this weekend. After a game against one-win Cranston West on Friday, the Hawks will visit 11-1 La Salle on Sunday at 2 p.m.
